Gabe Randel is a prime example. The Univ. of Wisconsin–Stevens Point forward began his junior hockey career with the Wausau Cyclones before making the jump to the Rochester Jr. Americans in the NAHL. Randel earned a NCAA commitment to Stevens Point, where he logged 20 points in 25 games as a freshman.
