One of the things rarely talked about is how Tichitt from the outset had a lot warfare/civil strife. Why else would they build tall and thick walls and watch towers. The towns and villages undoubtedly warred against each other.
@oumarou_rahim@copperskin722@TamaToure52071 No hate to Songhai people!! The Songhai Empire is still an amazing case of African state craft! I just wish they beat the Moroccans.
The Songhai empire in my opinion is the worst of the 3 great west African empires. Its capital, Gao, was known to be a complete ugly mess. There were few if any state buildings, and the ones that survived are horrible and shameful (Askia Muhammad’s tomb)
@copperskin722@oumarou_rahim@TamaToure52071 Chill out bro, I don’t hate Songhai empire. I like the gao empire, just not the Songhai empire . They didn’t last very long and lost to the Morrocans which caused a catastrophic event for all of West Africa.
@oumarou_rahim@TamaToure52071 Not gonna lie Songhai is still cool I just hate that one of Africas greatest emperors was buried in a porcupine mud hill.
And despite have a large and competent army, they ultimately failed to modernize and fell apart when west Africa needed them most. Derailing the entirety of west African history.
@Sahelianist It’s important to remember that Leo Africanus probably did not visit Jenné. He describes it as a “large village” with houses built out of reed and clay. Which was not true for the time (Timbuktu and the Songhai empire page 272)
@MeloCheick Not really, Ghana, Mali and Songhai used a variety of building techniques: dry stone, stone, mud brick(fired or unfired, circular or rectangular), and lastly with pisé, which is just coursed earth.
@Maqitzara Nah cuz I’m genuinely curious😭 Dakhlet el Atrouss was way larger, probably sported a bigger population, and had monumental architecture…how is that not a city???
@Habash2a@afrojudaic@tj70555083@rasDemi@KhadraGar Undoubtedly there are outliers, I know an Ethiopian guy who does look Indian, However if you look at how historical sources talk about Ethiopians you’d know that their dark skin is one of the things they were/are most known for.
