A story in wide circulation: Israel found ways to interfere in Scotland's last election and target John Swinney. [This site blocks bots, trolls and unnamed comments automatically]

Scotland's first minister was targeted by an Israeli firm spreading online disinformation before the Holyrood election, a French government agency has claimed.

John Swinney and the SNP were allegedly targeted in accounts linked to BlackCore – a tech company claiming to "shape narratives" who French authorities accused of trying to smear pro-Palestine election candidates.

Disinformation detection service Viginum said hundreds of fake accounts would leave co-ordinated comments on Swinney's social media posts.

Swinney had described the conflict in Gaza as a "man-made humanitarian catastrophe" and a genocide". The first minister described the Viginum report as "deeply concerning".

He said: "It is clear orchestrated disinformation campaigns and foreign election interference are issues which need to be taken seriously.

"Urgent steps need to be taken to counter the threat of foreign online political interference, and ensure that our democratic processes are not undermined.

"That begins with the UK Government, which has responsibility for national security, making dealing with hostile state online interference a far higher priority."

FYI: From 2020, when Civil Servants and MP’s worked from home, the Parliamentary Digital Service (PDS) mass-distributed pre-configured laptops, secure mobile devices, and hardware to the home addresses of every MP, Peer, and civil servant. They did not need to install private physical servers in individual houses because the devices themselves act as portable endpoints for the state's centralised servers… then, Government IT teams rapidly re-engineered their servers to handle the strain, massive scaling their corporate VPN capability. This allowed every single person in the state machine to plug their official laptop into their home Wi-Fi, click a button, and completely tunnel their traffic back into secure, centralized government servers.
