On July 1, the World Bank reclassified Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and the Philippines from lower-middle-income to upper-middle-income economies.

Their latest GDP per capita stands as follows:

Vietnam: $4,970
Philippines: $4,850
Sri Lanka: $4,670

India transitioned into a lower-middle-income country in 2009 and has remained in that category for nearly two decades. Our current national GDP per capita is approximately $2,800.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu has consistently focused on balancing economic growth with social welfare. By the end of this year, the state is projected to reach a GDP per capita of around $6,500- the highest among India’s large states.

As a state in India, Tamil Nadu has already surpassed the average income levels of these newly elevated upper-middle-income countries.

India’s national average of $2,800 masks more than it reveals. On one side, you have states like Tamil Nadu at $6,500; on the other, states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar hover around $1400 and $950, respectively. Consequently, India remains a country with stark regional inequality while still being relatively poor overall.

Furthermore, as noted recently, Tamil Nadu and Kerala maintain some of the lowest internal inequality rates in the nation.

That is why I keep repeating this point: the next 15 years represent a critical, "make-or-break" economic window for India.

DVAC WOMAN INSPECTOR SUSPENDED FOR SEEKING BRIBE DURING VIGILANCE INQUIRY

A woman police inspector attached to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) was placed under suspension after an internal inquiry found that she had sought a bribe from a person against whom she was conducting a preliminary vigilance inquiry. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), suspected of colluding with her, was transferred to the Nilgiris district.

According to police sources, Inspector Vimala was recently inducted into the DVAC and was assigned to conduct a preliminary inquiry against a government official. During the course of the inquiry, she sought a bribe from the person under investigation.

The misconduct came to light during internal monitoring by the anti-corruption agency. The matter was brought to the attention of DVAC Director A. Arun by Deputy Inspector General of Police N. Devarani.

Following the complaint, a detailed inquiry was conducted and the findings were submitted to the DVAC headquarters. Based on the report, the department placed Inspector Vimala under suspension pending further action.

Police sources said DSP Joy, who was suspected of having links to the incident, was transferred to the Nilgiris district as part of the administrative action taken by the department.

The DVAC has not disclosed the identity of the government official involved in the preliminary inquiry.

- Register DVAC cases based on ED's letters alleging corruption in MAWS dept and investigate them thoroughly
-Complete DVAC probes against Vaithilingam,Vijayabaskar,SP Velumani and other former AIADMK ministers
-Ensure 0 bribes-for-jobs in TN govt
-Take strict action against illegal sand mining
-Take a long hard look at Transport corporations. Take @UngalSoththu 's help
-Improve digital governance and transparency. Create websites and apps for all govt departments and share information. Start with Greater Chennai Police. There's immense will among bureaucrats, they are waiting for political will. Transparency and accountability will improve delivery of public services and reduce frivolous RTI petitions
- Please appoint Vice-Chancellors to TN Universities. They are in an absolute mess. Start with University of Madras
- Address the issue of painkiller tablet abuse among TN's youngsters. It's worse than ganja. Top police officers know the solutions. They will execute it as well.
-Please do something for the resettled slum dwellers in Kannagi Nagar, Ezhil Nagar, Perumbakkam and other areas. Their houses are in a complete mess. They have voted for you with great hopes.
