Western Players Misunderstand "Wuxia"
I grew up in a Chinese community, so Wuxia stories were always just… there.
TV shows, novels, and old movies are playing in the background. I never really stopped to explain them — they just made sense.
But watching Western players jump into Where Winds Meet, I realized something interesting:
"People aren’t confused by the combat or movement."
"They’re confused by why the characters act the way they do."
Many Western players instinctively read Wuxia heroes as medieval knights. But they’re actually built on very different values.
Here’s the simplest way I can put it:
In Western fantasy, knight usually:
1. Fights for a king, a lord, or a nation;
2. Follows laws, oaths, and institutions;
3. Gets legitimacy from rank, title, or bloodline.
Even rebels are still reacting to the system.
However, Wuxia heroes don’t work like that. A Wuxia hero:
1. Answers to no king;
2. Often exists outside the law
3. Follows a personal moral code, not a legal one
Justice isn’t defined by courts. It’s defined by whether you can live with your own conscience afterward.
That’s why reputation matters more than titles.
Why masters and sects matter more than governments.
And why do heroes help strangers even when it ruins their own lives.
And that’s also why Where Winds Meet feels so different. The world isn’t asking: “Are you loyal?”
It’s asking: “What kind of person are you, when no one is watching?”
Once you see that, the rooftop movement, the freedom, the constant moral tension — it all clicks.
It’s not power fantasy.
It’s a philosophy. I realized a lot of this stuff never really gets explained clearly in English, so I ended up making a full breakdown of what Wuxia actually is, where it came from, and why games like WWM feel the way they do.
Not a review — just context.

Genuinely curious:
What was your first impression of Wuxia before playing WWM?

It’s wild watching history repeat itself. 😅
Asian games blow up → gamers love them → Western journalists suddenly find every reason to drag them.
Where Winds Meet hits millions of players in two weeks. Steam reviews are sitting at an A-tier.
But IGN? 6/10. Eurogamer DE? 4/10.
At some point, you stop calling it ‘difference of opinion’ and start calling it a pattern.
Phil Fish said it out loud once — the rest say it quietly through their scores 🤡

Takeaway from today: Now this is my opinion, and I may be wrong or right.
But to me...if any of you ever wondered why Western Game Journalists and even some Western Game Devs treat Asian games with such disdain and seem to often throw shade at them, even when its obvious they're appealing to many gamers.
Remember Phil Fish's attitude towards Japanese (by extension Asian) games. I am of the opinion that Phil's thoughts on Asian games, is the thoughts shared by many Game Journalists and some Western Game Devs.
This is why you have IGN giving 6/10 to Where Winds Meet, Eurogamer Germany giving it a 4 OUT OF 10...or IGN again throwing shade at Black Myth Wukong's devs using mistranslations.
My opinion, Western Gaming Industry, particularly the Game Journalists, and the "Clique" developers, view Asian Games with vitriol and it never stopped - Phil Fish only said the quiet part out loud.
🥊 Here are 5 quick tips to fix your stamina, dodges, and ultimates so you stop throwing free wins!
