I’m a bit conservative in this way. I think standards are important and so I’m disappointed to see the CGS wearing combat uniform while giving a RUSI speech. He should be wearing service dress.
Generals are busy trying to show they’re one of the lads, they’re not. Nor should they be. If he was in the field, that’d be a different matter. But he was not.
During WW2 Roy Phillips joined the Royal Marines as a Bugle boy aged just 14.
His role was to play the Marines into battle.
"I had stepped on a shoe mine, which is designed to blow your boot off with your foot in it. I was 16 years old."
