Sometimes when people are in a cycle of abuse for that long and made to believe that it's their fault they start to believe it and even and try to appease the abuser to make it stop rather than try to escape

If you tricked someone and got away with it, you have no reason to continue trying to trick them especially if you know they aren't going to fall for it. Also notice how he's only acting like a sociopath in scenes where he's trying to be evil like his family
