This is a big problem. My daughter who moves to class 9 next year will have to drop French and choose 2 Indian languages. I would like her to learn Malayalam or Tamil or Kannada. But there are no teachers for these languages in North India. So only option is Hindi and Sanskrit.

I think this itself was already Hindi imposition in stages.

Earlier, the third language was compulsory only till Class 8. Now the burden is being extended into Classes 9 and 10 as well under NEP style implementation.

And the biggest issue nobody is talking enough about is this because managed by Union Government :

Students were already learning three languages in many schools.

For example:
Regional language + English + French/German/Japanese etc.

Now, by insisting on two mandatory Indian languages, many students may lose the flexibility to study useful foreign languages early. Instead of choosing French or German, they may be pushed toward Hindi because schools already have Hindi infrastructure and teachers.

So the issue is not “students are refusing to learn languages”.

The issue is:
Why should the Union decide which language gets priority in a student’s life ?

Within the state, people already communicate using their regional language. Outside the state and internationally, English already works as a bridge language for education, jobs, technology and communication.

Then why should students be forced into learning two Indian languages compulsorily ?

What’s the third language a student from the North usually choosing ? In many schools it is Sanskrit itself. So practically, they continue with Hindi + English + Sanskrit while South Indian students are expected to handle Regional language + English + Hindi.

And another important concern:

Today they say there is no major board exam pressure for the third language. Fine. But what is the guarantee that boards will not make it compulsory in public exams later ?

Once the structure becomes normalised inside the system, changing the evaluation pattern later becomes very easy.

That uncertainty itself creates pressure for students and parents.

Students in Classes 9 and 10 are already under massive academic stress with board exams, entrance preparation and career pressure. Why introduce another layer of compulsory language burden without clear necessity ?

And ground reality matters. Most schools already have more Hindi teachers than Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam teachers. So students are indirectly pushed toward Hindi because schools lack alternatives. That is not “choice”. That is structural pressure.

I understood that State Governments may have limited powers in certain education policies, but can we at least question this properly ? I genuinely feel DMK failed to strongly question the implementation side of this issue.

1. How many schools across India actually have proper provisions and enough staff to teach Tamil as a second or third language ?

2. Even KV schools struggled to appoint enough Tamil teachers. Can we question that first before making three languages effectively compulsory ?

3. If reciprocity is the goal, how many Hindi belt schools are seriously teaching Tamil, Telugu, Kannada or Malayalam ?

4. Why is the burden of adjustment always expected from non Hindi states ?

5. If there is no major board exam importance for the third language, why make it compulsory at all ?

6. Why restrict students from choosing globally useful foreign languages like French or German ?

7. If students “voluntarily choose” Hindi only because schools lack teachers for other Indian languages, is that really a free choice ?

8. What guarantee exists that this will never become a compulsory board exam subject in the future ?

Policy on paper and ground reality are completely different.

If this is not indirect Hindi imposition, then what exactly is it?
