Forgot to post this earlier! Last week, we did some revision of learned concepts: mouthpiece scales where we control the instrument at its smallest, and overtones where we control the instrument at its largest (off the low Bb). We found we needed to review tongue height a lot!

My student had some dental work this week, so we talked reed adjusting! He didn't know there were so many different "regions" on a reed that affect playability in different registers/ranges. We made a mess with sand paper and experimenting with sanding some dud reeds.

Plot twist this week! My learner (who is a composer) wanted to play some of the parts he's written. So, we took a look at one of his recent projects and started to check out how the parts fall on the horn! #letsteachadults @YEPeducation

This week, we practiced with a modified approach of Dr. Biasiotto's famous basketball free-throw study (check it out if you aren't familiar!). We had many repeated successes by visualizing the way we wanted to sound before playing; this especially helped with articulation!

Had a bit of departure from technical learning today, and instead, we learned Someone to Watch over Me. It's a favourite tune of my student's partner! We listened to a recording by Ben Webster (a great tenor saxophonist and alumni of the Duke Ellington band) for inspiration.

Building off our mapping of the transcription, this week we worked on articulations in the first two phrases in "Work Song". We talked about how the air support never stops and practiced hard and light articulations and discussed how they're approached differently.
