🎮Wolverine Review🎮
I mostly had fun with Wolverine, but I still walked away feeling surprisingly let down by a game I was pretty excited about and waited years for.
To put it simply: the mixed critic scores are mostly accurate (even if a few takes were overly picky). The game is just "okay." However, because it has so many cutscenes, I can't even say it's good as a hack-and-slash brawler, because it's trying to be more than that.
❌The Bad❌
Messy narrative:
For a game that leans so heavily on cutscenes, the story itself is surprisingly disjointed. The pacing is all over the place, jumping between plot threads without much cohesion or real emotional payoff, making it hard to stay invested in what's actually happening.
One thing they definitely made clear is that Jean Grey was thirsty as hell for Logan... that much was obvious.
Pointless cameos:
You could completely cut certain characters out of the game, like Callisto, and the plot wouldn't change at all. This goes for a few other characters, but I don't want to post spoilers.
Forgiving mechanics:
The parry windows are massive, which means you rarely get punished for playing recklessly. Worse, you can literally press the wrong buttons during several QTEs and still pass them, making them feel completely pointless. (I ended up just turning on auto-complete for QTEs).
Mind you, this point could also be considered a pro for more casual players.
Weak boss fights:
For the most part, the boss encounters are incredibly safe and boring. There are maybe one or two exceptions, but even those drag on way too long and quickly devolve into a repetitive slog rather than an epic, punishing showdown. These fights are truly a test of attrition, not skill, IMO.
Bumping up the difficulty doesn't actually change the mechanics of these fights; it just makes them take longer and forces you to react a little quicker.
Combat & Camera:
The game tries to use the DualSense to its advantage, but even with the haptics cranked all the way up, the feedback felt a bit limp.
While a few of Logan’s moves carried some real weight, others that should have hit like a truck lacked that satisfying hit-stop impact.
Compared to the fluidity of Spider-Man, it often felt like my strikes weren't fully connecting. When you combine that with a camera you constantly have to wrestle with mid-brawl, the combat became pretty tiresome at times.
✅The Good✅
Technical performance:
Rock-solid stability with zero crashes while I played. I played on the high-fidelity setting on the PS5 Pro, and the game is beautiful, just like the other Insomniac titles I've played. I usually play games like this on performance mode, but I had no issues playing at the lower framerate to achieve the higher fidelity.
The basics:
The bloody and gory combat is satisfying, and at the end of the day, you get to play as Wolverine. His regeneration and the level of damage he can take would sometimes make me almost ill... I mean, there's bones, tendons, blood, and God knows what else...
Enemies can indeed be dismembered and when you're fully enraged, Wolverine is just tearing and shredding everything in his path, and I loved that.
Wolverine's moveset is pretty basic, but you do unlock some fun abilities later on that add variety. Even then, they never quite feel like enough, especially without gadgets or other weapons to expand your options.
Accessibility:
Those massive parry windows I complained about? They're actually a huge plus if you just want to relax, not "git gud," and feel like an overpowered mutant.
The "Fart Gas" (Thanks Gene):
The hand-holding and navigation hints really aren't that bad. The internet clowns wanted something to complain about and picked that, even though there's plenty of valid pain points to discuss.
Fun customization and Easter eggs:
Tons of cool suits and claws to unlock, along with quite a few easter eggs in the game. Some are genuinely cool or even obscure.
Cutscenes:
I actually enjoyed the cutscenes, even if they leaned a little heavy on the romance at times. Most of the voice actors did a great job, and their performances kept me hooked on a story that was otherwise pretty hard to follow.
To be honest, I often found myself just wanting to get to the next cinematic because the actual combat felt so "meh," especially during the early hours of the game.
The Verdict:
Overall, Wolverine lands at a 7/10 for me. It’s not terrible, but it's certainly no Sony masterpiece.
Honestly, if you can just get over the fact that you aren't playing an Insomniac Spider-Man game, you'll have a lot more fun with it.
But ultimately, I have a hard time believing this was the studio's true vision. Did it really deserve its own special edition consoles and controllers? Not really (although I have to admit, they do look pretty nice).
I just can’t recommend buying this at full price. Wait for a deep sale, or better yet, borrow a physical copy from a friend. 😉

Getting Platinum after only 19 hours is kind of crazy.
In either case, I’m gonna try and sell the disc tomorrow and move onto something else…#Wolverine
Spread the word.
From the mind of Zach Cregger, director of Weapons and Barbarian. Filmed for IMAX – Resident Evil is in theatres tomorrow, 9.17. Get tickets now. #ResidentEvil
My biggest issue w/ #Wolverine game, especially in the early parts, is how many claw attacks is required of me to KO regular human enemies. I get that later enemies justifiably require multiple stabs but 1 claw should KO army dudes in bulletproof vest.
Story is kinda meh too...
6 hours into Wolverine and I must say, the game is kind of mid... at least when compared to Onimusha.
The battle is just very basic...
I'd still recommend it to Wolverine fans but if you only have time for 1 game this month, then I think Onimusha is a much better choice.

Insomniac’s Narrative Director Says Wolverine Feels ‘Yearning’ for Sabretooth and Their Rivalry Has ‘Room for Love’
“Logan feels that yearning and he gets scared and pulls away. Sabretooth feels that yearning and it makes him hurt and want to lash out to exert that hurt outward. Hate and love are so hand in hand. You hurt me so I’m going to hurt you, and we’re still going to be linked because now the pain is shared.” -Insomniac Narrative Director Walt Williams
