USDA's Annual Cattle Inventory Report estimated total cattle and calves down 3% from 2022. Jan 1 beef cow inventory was estimated down 3.5%, after a downward revision to 2022 (see chart below). This puts beef cow numbers below 2014 and the lowest since 1962. Source: @usda_nass
If you choose to “buy local” beef I think that’s great. If you also spread false information about the quality and safety of beef in grocery stores sourced through larger packing facilities, just know that you are hurting the same ranchers you claim to support.
