Whangārei is turning out in numbers, Saturdays at 10am in the Town Basin, for our Red Loop Walk with Dr Gary, reminding people that the good and hard-working people of Whangārei simply cannot afford another 3 years of this destructive government.
Join us. We're really building in numbers! And the walks are fun. Bring a dog, or a kid. Or both.
Wear red.
(Walk as much, or as little, as you want).
By the way, the video was taken towards the end of our walk:
Big energy.
Why?
Maybe because we all have hope for a better, more humane, more people-based govt, and an MP who will look out for the average New Zealander.
We are building.
See you Saturday 17 October, 10am at the rolling ball clock in the Town Basin.
-Gary
"A burden...that we need to get rid of."
It's refreshing to hear the National candidate for Whangārei admit his own government's changes to the disability laws (making disability reassessments more stringent) have made the disability reassessment process:
"Ridiculous", and "a burden" that "we need to get rid of", "creating unnecessary pressure on families". And that we need to "remove that reassessment criteria immediately, because it's just not fair."
He is absolutely right!
As the preceding question from a disabled audience member highlighted, the Coalition forcing permanently disabled people to jump through increasingly frequent and more stringent hoops in order to prove they still qualify, is degrading and wasteful.
FWIW, Labour will repeal the broken Disability Support Services Act. And rewrite it with disabled advocates' involvement from day one.
It's good to see that more people are realising how damaging some of these changes have been to people with disabilities and their carers and whanau.
-Dr Gary Payinda
This 'Meet the Candidates' session was livestreamed by the Tiaho Trust, and should be available on their social media.
"WANNABE"? Or "Gonna-be"?
The Northern Advocate editors' headline called me a "Wannabe".
Fair enough: After all, I do *want* to represent the people of Whangārei. I Wannabe the voice of people who are working harder than ever but not getting ahead.
But our movement, based on 19 years of local service to the community in the ED and a decade as the medical director of a nz rescue agency, 13 months of meetings with the people of Whangārei, 8,000 Facebook followers, 1 million views a month, and widespread engagement with people across hundreds of doorknocks and hui and meetups from CEOs to mechanics...is not just a 'Wannabe' campaign.
We have a shot at winning Whangārei.
But if Wannabe is how NZME would like to frame it, then let's run with the theme of the day:
What this "Wannabe" wants:
15% of all big govt contracts carved out for our small businesses!
6,000 social houses built, not cancelled!
$400 million for 2,000 school renovations plus $200M for hospital repairs: employing tradies fast!
Fresh and locally made school lunches. Employing local businesses and growers!
Yes, we're doing all of this. It's decent, and it's practical. It helps people. It's Labour.
Can't wait to do my part to make this National-led govt,
which has delivered us:
48,000 fewer jobs,
25,000 more kids in poverty,
the lowest wage growth in the OECD,
gone, gone, gone.
If a government doesn't look out for the people, what the heck is it there for? The tobacco companies?
Help this "Wannabe" become a "Gonna-be"
Come on out with us, Saturday October 17th at 10am!! Meet Town Basin rolling ball clock, for a walk around the Loop (Or however far you can join us... All are welcome, including kids, wheelchair users, scooters, and dogs).
These Loop Walks with Gary are getting BIG.
We'll show Whangārei what a People-focused MP, and govt, looks like.
There's a heck of a lot of people supporting this campaign and turning up. Join in, make it unmistakeably about People: Regular average hard-working Whangārei people.
We're building!

Share it around:
If you can't afford electricity & petrol, and are struggling to pay the mortgage, know that:
We have a rooftop solar plan that should save you around $1,000+ a year with no upfront cost.
We will break up 15% of large government contracts to go to small businesses.
We will build 6000 social houses, hire 2400 nurses a year, and restore womens pay equity. We will commit 600 million to repairing schools and hospitals that will put tradies to work quickly.
Building up lives and raising income for tradies, youth apprentices, small businesses and regular working people.
No billions for corporate welfare. No punching down on the poorest.
But we will go after price-gouging monopolies in the petrol, gas and electricity sectors.
-Gary
Jobs. At Northport last week talking with CEO/mgmt about expansion and Jobs.
And at Channel Infrastructure, talking about modernisation and jobs for Whangārei workers.
And at Northpower, talking about renewables and transmission upgrades and Jobs.
And with a dairy farmer handing over his farm of 50 years to his children. We talked about on-farm jobs.
And at NorthTec last week, we talked about the doubling of apprenticeships under the next Labour government, and a replacement of the cancelled funding for local Maori trades training.
Join be for the Loop walk Oct 10, 10am town basin, and i will tell you about improvements for small business (10x higher instant write-offs, 30K people that wont have to file GST, 15% of govt contracts being broken up for LOCAL bidders (this will be big for Whg!), and a 600M schools-and-hospitals repair plan that will get tradies employed fast. And improvements to electricity affordability. And more.

8,002 followers! Spent $250 on ads for the whole social media campaign so far.
See you this SATURDAY 10am for our LOOP walk. In red.
We do this Together, Whangārei.
This was the most Troubling campaign event yet. Two days ago at Forum North.
At the well-run Disability Meet the Candidates session.
To watch people in the audience, some tearing up, as they told us about the changes to disability funding they faced.
Respite refused, equipment denied, Total Mobility Services being made unaffordably more expensive, Flexible funding frozen then reinstated 2 years later, disrupting the lives of people can least afford it.
Not having a public voice and then being granted just 19 days to assemble 16,000 signatures in opposition to the Disability Support Services Bill (A truly awful, unjust bill that we will repeal).
And then to hear a candidate from the current Coalition, talk about how they think the very rules their Party tightened were far too harsh and unfair, and needed to be changed.
It was your own party that did this, sir! Or did you just learn about this today?
Where was your outrage while my patients were suffering?
While the man in the audience had to quit his job as a Log Loader operator to care for his wife because her noon time carer funding was eliminated, and he couldn't bear to see her left in a state, all day. While the girl next to him was turned down for respite, after being told it was a 3-year wait.
Where were you while we were protesting the worst aspects of the Disability Support Services bill, doing Frontline podcasts on it for anyone who would listen, writing submissions and signing petitions, speaking up and down the region at Healthcare meetings, and marching in hikoi, what were you, in Auckland, doing to fight your own government's startlingly punitive and dismissive approach to the disabled community, the beneficiaries, and the vulnerable?
Where were you? Who were you helping? Who were you representing? Who were you advocating for?
To the people of Whangārei:
Judge us by our actions. Our history. Our actually being present.
Not by our slogans, our billboards, our cars, our clothes, or our donors. Not even by our well-crafted words delivered on a stage.
Judge us by our deeds, and who we fought for over the decades.
Because these things matter.
-Dr Gary
To the writer who extolled the virtues of NZ being nuclear-free...and proudly decent (and independent) in our public policy..without the worry of a Chernobyl or Fukushima on our shores. And with no support for the industrial strength killing of civilians that nuclear weapons bring.
Yes, I hear you. And Labour will support, fully:
An independent and values- and rule-of-law based foreign policy, and is committed to remaining fully nuclear free.
NZ punches above her weight when it comes to upholding decency and safety at the international level. And under Labour, will continue to do so.
-Dr Gary
Your next Labour MP for Whangārei
Whangarei Startups is a group of innovative people creating everything from bespoke prints... to tidal energy generation projects ( ! )... to child safety registries... and organic kai businesses.
I attended the #Whangarei version the #DragonsDen: where inventors and entrepreneurs pitch their startup business plans and get advice, feedback, networking, and investment to help them grow.
We all know Northland breeds hard-working, striving, think-outside-the-square people. The region has been neglected for so long we have to be twice as resourceful!
Labour can up the support for these types of entrepreneurs through our Future Fund, the Sovereign wealth fund that will grow regional and innovative businesses and infrastructure. 100% NZ-based businesses.
We also have changes that will reduce the regulatory and GST burdens for SMEs, a CGT policy that will drive productive business investment, a $10K instant write-off for qualifying small and medium businesses, and a doubling of apprenticeship support for businesses to two years.
Awesome for business...happy to explain more at our 24 Rathbone small business sessions.
-Gary
"What will Labour do?"
We are going to go after the Supermarket, Electricity, Gas, Banks, and Fuel Monopolies that are price-gouging NZ consumers.
Our Rooftop solar should reduce your electricity costs by 40%, with no out-of-pocket cost to you.
Our Fair Pay Agreements will protect your wages.
Our Women's Pay Equity repeal will restore fairness.
Our fuel excise 3yr freeze will save you petrol money.
We're doubling the length of Apprenticeship funding to 2 years, adding a Maori Trades training program, cutting student debt, and hiring around 2,400 nurse-grads a year.
Choose Labour + Dr Gary Payinda.
For a government that will look after the average person, the regular New Zealander, struggling under this shambles of a govt.
It's time for Mr Luxon, the 'CEO of NZ', to go:
His heart was never truly into helping the people.
-Dr Gary
See you at the Town Basin clock this Saturday 3 Oct, at 10am for our Loop Walk!
We are building.
