My backyard is Sherman, Sheridan & Custer country. My ancestors marched to Atlanta, two died there. I have every reason for a Northern bias.

Our mistake was allowing the war to be sanitized into Northern virtue and Southern guilt. Reducing the entire conflict to slavery erased the harder questions of power, federalism and constitutional order. It also gave us permission to stop asking uncomfortable questions…like whether secession was constitutionally permissible in the first place.

Governments expand power through three ancient levers…fear, morality and emergency. Fear makes power necessary. Morality makes it righteous. Emergency makes resistance seem irresponsible.

The original constitutional order died at Appomattox.

The reason you’re never going to hear anything else about the Les Vegas shooting is because a belt fed machine gun was used. Any Infantry soldier worth his salt knows the rate of fire of an M240B. Furthermore, it’s nearly impossible to maintain such rates of fire when a bumpstock, especially from a prone position. Even a very experienced shooter would find it difficult to do, especially given the tension and stress of the moment.
