Thank you for those kind words. The site was severely damaged by a server upgrade at my university, and for years I thought it was gone forever. Thankfully, repair (albeit tedious) has been possible. Now I've taken full ownership of all aspects of the site, so if it's damaged again, it will be because Cloudflare accidentally shut down the internet again (as it did a few years ago).

I've spent this month refreshing the Martin Amis Web, the authoritative digital archive for that author. I've overseen the site since 2006. @britishlibrary designated it a "site of scholarly importance" in 2012.

In addition to whole-scale visual and functional improvements, I've added two new (gorgeous) pages:

Podcasts and, more important, After Amis, the one-day launch event -- with Will Self -- that's planned for August 25th.

Indeed, were Joyce starting out today, almost certainly he would have been forced to stop with Dubliners. Always helps to have powerful benefactors, and publishers today are even more terrified of losses than back then. Joyce would, though, have one helluva Substack, though. Yeesh, just imagine.

I had to change offices at work, after nearly 20 years in one space. Gave me a chance to thin the book-herd. For some people, that's anathema. For me, though, it was like checking off items from a to-do list. Nope, not gonna read that -- ever. And that's okay. Ars longa vita brevis.

@amazing_physics most professor handwriting is borderline illegible (ask me how I know), so this tech could also clean-up or standardize manual idiosyncrasies. love it -- but cost likely will mean I'll never get to experience it.

@RonanFarrow people correctly referencing War Games -- but the Entity in recent Mission Impossible films is the modern version. Neither will ever occur. AI has a much simpler (and boring) route to eliminate humanity: simply shut down the electrical grids. Boom, done, buh-bye humans.
