CONGRATULATIONS Iowa and Illinois – you're more humid than the Amazon Rainforest.
Blame the corn. A single acre of mature corn this time of year can evapotranspirate, or "sweat," between 2,000 and 4,000 gallons of water per day. That moisture festers in the lower atmosphere, making the heat index values unbearable.
Dew points could reach 80 DEGREES. LUCKY US! Every cubic meter of air is holding more than half a shot glass' worth of water.
For comparison, the highest dew point I could find in the Amazon was 79º. So parts of Iowa and Illinois... yep. More humid. Enjoy. :/
Storm following loop of the intense MCS/?Derecho? through South Dakota this morning. Wind gusts up-to 131mph and a couple tornadoes were spawned from this system! #SDwx
If verified, this 131 mph gust likely represents one of the strongest directly measured thunderstorm wind gusts in U.S. History. Looking through the SPC database, the majority of the higher wind gusts appear to be erroneous, estimated, or not thunderstorm related.
One thing I've seen people misunderstand: this isn't just a problem for the areas missing balloon launches. Those observations help initialize the forecast models, and any missing data can degrade forecasts far downstream as the model evolves. If you're in Ohio, you should care just as much about a missed launch in Montana as someone who lives there.
The Solsgirth/Rossburn, Manitoba tornado is now the first Canadian tornado ever to record a 60dbz debris ball on radar. The debris ball got as high as 65dbz. Damage on Aaron Jayjack’s stream looks about EF-2/EF-3ish. Stream will be linked below. #mbstorm
I really wish we better understood the boundary layer processes leading up to tornadogenesis. This storm went from nothing to tornado-capable in 30 minutes and had a hook echo as soon as it was detectable on reflectivity. No prior mesocyclone, no nudgers, nothin.

These outlook colors are totally misleading. I feel like we shouldn’t be creating and posting our own ranking scales for outlooks, it misleads and misinforms. Also the wording ‘extreme’ for today is bogus.
