@notsayingowt This electoral system could deliver a majority far right govt on a third of the vote. This Labour government currently has a massive majority with which to legislate for proportional representation, the only way to be sure of preventing that outcome. It's on Labour to act now.
Labour are not, under any conceivable circumstances, going to have a majority after GE2029. The most likely outcome of GE2029, as of now, is a Reform-Tory majority. The next GE after that will be in 2034, after five years of far-right rule. PR comes *now*, or it never comes.
Australian flotilla activist details sexual assault and torture by Israeli forces
An activist highlights the disparity between sanitized state propaganda videos and the grim reality of detention.
The reality of detention:
Australian activist Gemma O'Toole provided an audio testimony detailing her treatment following the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla to Gaza. Guards subjected detainees to repeated strip searches, sleep deprivation, and sexual assault. The abuse occurred while the international activists remained in Israeli custody. O'Toole managed to send a voice message describing the conditions immediately after her release.
Propaganda versus practice:
Israeli minister Itamar Ben-Gvir circulated a video purporting to show the detention conditions of the activists. O'Toole noted the footage captured only an infinitesimal fraction of the actual abuse endured by the detainees. She observed the media focusing on the sanitized state video rather than the full extent of the violations. The activist pointed out the guards inflicted this severe treatment on predominantly white international citizens while under relative global scrutiny.
The state publishes a highlight reel of its own restraint while keeping the strip searches in the outtakes.
@Whyno_Scotland@colz261@PulaRJS In fact many racist Glaswegians habitually slander places like Kenmure St and especially nearby Govanhill as 'no-go areas' because of our diversity (they're not no-go areas, it's a beautiful, joyful community full of solidarity and activism and courage).
@Whyno_Scotland@colz261@PulaRJS And as I live in Glasgow southside I can also say it's an exception. It's the most diverse neighbourhood in Scotland, and you don't have to go far outside of that square mile of the city before you encounter open racism and 'raise the colours'-style flag intimidation.
@colz261 I'd say methodologically sound, professionally conducted large-scale social attitude surveys say otherwise. Promoting this self-congratulatory myth about Scotland being less racist is irresponsible, as it discourages people from really tackling the problem.
Israel killed Abbas in South Lebanon today — dropping a bomb on his home.
Buried under the rubble of the place he was supposed to be safest.
This is what Israel calls “ceasefire.”
@colz261@PulaRJS@Whyno_Scotland This Scottish-exceptionalist complacency is dangerous. I live in Glasgow and I've heard more explicit, shameless racism spoken here than I ever did in Kent. Less anecdotally, surveys show almost exactly the same attitudes to immigration and refugees in Scotland as in England.
Israel killed every single child in this photo today in Deir Qanoun Al-Nahr, South Lebanon.
Every. Single. One.
6 children.
Murdered, alongside their parents.
These are the questions we asked of the Scottish Government and Scottish Enterprise today, as they sat down with the arms companies supplying weapons for the genocide.
NO MORE PUBLIC FUNDS FOR GENOCIDE!
Josh "Labour Together" Simons, the man whose job was to crush and eradicate the left wing from the Labour party being offered a job as head of policy by Andy Burnham should tell you everything you need to know.
@breadandposes@BareLeft@CarolineLucas Maybe a regional list system where they fancy their chances of being selected high on their party list. But really I think we all know it's 99% sure Labour will not act on this and will risk walking us up to the cliff edge of Reform govt because they have no spine or principles.
@breadandposes@BareLeft@CarolineLucas Hmn interesting. Though I don't see them going for PR spontaneously on that basis, also on that basis: it would be such a systemic shake-up that they could not be sure of keeping their seats, at least it would partly depend on the specific PR system being proposed.
