“Why do we have only 2 Black women that are running Fortune 500 companies?”

And don’t tell me that the answer is “gotta work harder”

The underrepresentation of Black women and marginalized groups in top corporate roles is not due to merit or effort. Black women, for example, are the most educated demographic in the nation. The underrepresentation is about systemic bias, unfairness and a lack of intentional action to reimagine leadership in a way that values merit, diverse experiences, and perspectives.

El encuentro que sostuve hoy con representantes del Global Black Economic Forum @GBEF_, Equal Chance, @ColombiaOEI y @baobabinnova, busca unir esfuerzos en la estructuración de un fondo para las industrias culturales y creativas del pueblo afro, como también de una federación empresarial afrodescendiente que contribuya al fortalecimiento colectivo de pequeñas y medianas empresas.

Desde Cali, en el Foro “Impulsando la Justicia Económica de los Pueblos y las Personas Afrodescendientes”, conmemoramos el Día de la Afrocolombianidad y los 174 años de la abolición de la esclavización en el país.

Invito a mi pueblo a pensar en la libertad y la justicia económica, que al final será lo que nos permitirá avanzar en la restauración de nuestra dignidad, tan pisoteada históricamente.

Hoy honramos a todos los empresarios y empresarias afrodescendientes por su esfuerzo en medio de las adversidades. Desde quienes transforman los frutos del Pacífico en helados, hasta los saberes tradicionales de nuestras matronas para producir el viche, la bebida ancestral que irriga la raíz de nuestro ser y lo que somos como pueblo afrodescendiente.

The Global Black Economic Forum released a new report setting the record straight: Far from benefiting from “special treatment,” minority-owned businesses are being systematically shut out of federal contracting opportunities.

The data shows that minority-owned firms, a vital part of the business community, receive less than 10% of federal contract dollars.

With recent political rollbacks, this disparity is set to worsen.

We will continue the fight to secure fair access and opportunity to unlock the potential of diverse entrepreneurs and bring us closer to an equitable future.

We celebrate because our history is not a footnote—it is foundational.

From the genius of Black inventors to the courage of civil rights warriors, from the brilliance of Black artists to the innovation of Black entrepreneurs, our contributions are powerful. They may try to silence our stories, but history speaks louder than fear.

We celebrate because to honor Black history is to honor truth. Erasure has never been an option for us.

Some fear it. But we celebrate it. And no amount of fear will ever stop the truth from shining through.

This Black History Month, we do more than remember—we affirm. We uplift. We persevere. Because Black history isn’t just a month. It’s every month. Every day. Always.
