Our Mission: to work with mana whenua & our community to protect biodiversity, reintroduce lost species, and grow a sustainable, ecology-based economy on Aotea
If so, please get to the Auckland Council Have Your Say site and do the business. Find out more and feel free to use our GUIDELINES - by 11pm on 28 March. https://t.co/2ilWRmvi1u
Did you know Mayor Wayne Brown wants big cuts to environmental budgets? Like us, you probably won't support his proposals to cut support for community conservation and biodiversity protection and you'll DEFINITELY not be keen on the big cuts to the Aotea Local Board's budgets!
Protect Aotea is in court again with the Ports of Auckland over the marine sediment dumping. One dump site is off the coast of Medlands Beach here on Aotea (the green dot below).

Thanks @WWFNewZealand for supporting the Aotea Trap Library.
So much community rat-trapping going on now, to save our endangered species. 🦎 🦜

Only 10% of Aotearoa’s island land mass was predator-free as at 2014.
This could increase to 50% by 2030 if Aotea Great Barrier Island and Rakiura Steward Island go predator-free.
Tonight we’re listening in to the legendary @IsldJames as he delivers his lecture:
“A scientific Swiss army knife for conservation”. https://t.co/FdEKzbisOI
On islands such as Great Mercury / Ahuahu, biosecurity dogs have been shown to be very helpful in dealing with a rodent incursion.
“A dog is like a mobile trapping device.”
Today’s the day!
The Aotea Pestival is on at Claris from 1pm.
Lots of opportunities to hear about projects to reduce and eradicate nasties like rats from the island.

Rosie Bowman and Shona Sangster are now updating us on predator control projects on Rakiura/ Stewart Island.
SIRCET’s vision is for tieke (saddleback) to be present in everyone’s gardens. This requires very low rat numbers.
