BlackBerry Curve 9300 (2010)

The Curve 8520 had already proven that a stripped down, WiFi equipped Curve could genuinely sell well without needing every feature under the sun. The 9300, announced in August 2010, took that same formula and added back the one thing the 8520 had deliberately left out, real speed.

RIM built the Curve 3G, as it was widely branded, directly on top of the 8520’s design, keeping the full QWERTY keyboard, the optical trackpad, WiFi, stereo Bluetooth, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a memory card slot supporting up to 32GB. The 2.46 inch display stayed at 320 by 240 pixels, and the 2 megapixel camera with LED flash carried over largely unchanged too. What actually separated the 9300 from its predecessor was sitting underneath, HSDPA 3G data and, for the first time on this budget tier of Curve, built in GPS.

That combination mattered more than it might look on a spec sheet. The 8520 had been fast on WiFi but stuck on slow 2G data the moment you left a hotspot. The 9300 fixed that gap directly, giving people real 3G speeds wherever they went, while GPS opened up genuine navigation and location services on a phone that was still priced well below the flagship Bold line. Under the hood ran a 624MHz processor with 256MB of RAM, modest even by 2010 standards, but enough to keep the interface feeling smooth for messaging, browsing, and basic apps, which was really all this phone needed to do well. A removable 1,150 mAh battery rounded it out, giving reasonable battery life for daily use without asking for anything unusual from the user.

None of this made the 9300 exciting in the way the Storm had tried to be exciting two years earlier. It wasn’t chasing a new interaction model or trying to prove anything about touchscreens. It was RIM doing something it had gotten genuinely good at by this point, taking an already solid, already popular design and quietly filling in its biggest gap. For a huge number of buyers, especially in markets where BlackBerry was still expanding fast, the 9300 became exactly the phone they wanted, a real keyboard, real 3G, real GPS, real WiFi, at a price that didn’t require a flagship budget.

That’s really the position the Curve 9300 occupied in BlackBerry’s story. It wasn’t a turning point the way the Bold 9000 or the Storm had been. It was proof that RIM’s basic formula, a great keyboard wrapped around dependable communication, could keep scaling downward into more affordable devices without losing what made it work in the first place. And for a company about to face a genuinely difficult stretch against the iPhone and a fast growing Android, having a reliable, well loved workhorse like the 9300 in the lineup was worth more than it usually got credit for.
