Broilers are susceptible to various diseases due to their rapid growth and environmental conditions. Below is a guide to common broiler diseases, symptoms, treatments, and prevention strategies.

1. Coccidiosis

Cause: Parasitic protozoa (Eimeria species).

Symptoms:

Bloody or watery diarrhea.

Lethargy and loss of appetite.

Drooping wings and ruffled feathers.

Treatment:

Administer Amprolium or Sulfaquinoxaline in drinking water for 3–5 days.

Use Toltrazuril (Baycox) for severe cases.

Prevention:

Keep litter dry and clean.

Add anti-coccidials like Amprolium to water weekly as a preventive.

Rotate litter regularly to reduce parasite load.

2. Newcastle Disease

Cause: Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV).

Symptoms:

Greenish diarrhea.

Respiratory distress (gasping, coughing).

Twisting of the neck (torticollis).

Treatment:

No cure; supportive treatment with Multivitamins and antibiotics for secondary infections.

Prevention:

Vaccinate at Day 7 and Day 21 (Lasota).

Strict biosecurity to prevent virus introduction.

3. Infectious Bursal Disease (Gumboro)

Cause: Virus affecting young broilers (1–6 weeks).

Symptoms:

Ruffled feathers, reluctance to move.

White or watery diarrhea.

Swollen cloaca.

Treatment:

No direct treatment; administer Multivitamins and electrolytes for recovery.

Use antibiotics to prevent secondary infections.

Prevention:

Vaccinate at Day 14 and booster on Day 28.

Maintain clean and disinfected housing.

4. Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD)

Cause: Mycoplasma bacteria, often linked with poor ventilation.

Symptoms:

Nasal discharge and watery eyes.

Sneezing, coughing, and gasping.

Poor weight gain.

Treatment:

Administer Tylosin, Oxytetracycline, or Enrofloxacin in drinking water.

Prevention:

Ensure proper ventilation in the broiler house.

Regularly clean feeders and drinkers.

5. Fowl Cholera

Cause: Pasteurella multocida bacteria.

Symptoms:

Swollen wattles and joints.

Yellowish or greenish diarrhea.

Sudden death in severe cases.

Treatment:

Administer Sulfa drugs (e.g., Sulfadimidine) or Tetracyclines.

Prevention:

Maintain strict hygiene and rodent control.

Vaccination is available in endemic areas.

6. Infectious Coryza

Cause: Bacteria (Haemophilus paragallinarum).

Symptoms:

Swollen face and eyes.

Nasal discharge and foul smell.

Reduced feed intake and weight gain.

Treatment:

Use Tylosin, Erythromycin, or Sulfa drugs in water.

Prevention:

Maintain clean housing and avoid overcrowding.

Isolate sick birds immediately.

7. Fungal Infections (Aspergillosis)

Cause: Fungal spores from damp litter or feed.

Symptoms:

Gasping and respiratory issues.

Weakness and reduced growth.

Treatment:

No direct treatment; administer Copper sulfate in water.

Remove and replace moldy litter and feed.

Prevention:

Store feed in a dry place.

Regularly replace wet or damp litter.

8. Heat Stress

Cause: High environmental temperatures.

Symptoms:

Panting and spreading of wings.

Reduced feed intake and growth.

Treatment:

Provide Electrolytes (e.g., Stress pack) in water.

Increase ventilation and reduce stocking density.

Prevention:

Install fans or wet curtains in the poultry house.

Supply cool water during hot weather.
