On 17 Sept, #Chikyu🚢lowered the LWD (Logging While Drilling) tools to the seabed & prepared to drill. On sunny days, scientists take breaks from the lab to enjoy the sunrise/sunsets & fresh air on the helideck. Today, they also celebrated the co-chiefs birthday🎉🎂

The mag 7.1 quake near Miyazaki is a subduction megathrust quake, and has motivated JMA to issue an alert that the chance of a much larger one on the adjacent Nankai segment(s) is heightened in the short term. If we had a similar event in Cascadia, the response might be the same.
A very eventful, yet bittersweet, week 7 comes to a close as we begin the long transit back to #Amsterdam. Everyone gathered for the last core to arrive on deck Friday afternoon, marking both the end of the expedition and the program that made it possible.
