MURIC Alleges Religious Bias in N25bn Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport Chapel Project and Relief Distributions
The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Federal Government of favouritism following reports of a planned N25 billion ecumenical chapel at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
In a statement released on Friday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Ishaq Akintola, said the project, allegedly being executed in collaboration with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), raises serious concerns about fairness in the treatment of religious groups across the country.
The group also condemned what it described as an uneven distribution of relief funds. It pointed to the reported allocation of N2 billion to victims of violence in Plateau State, noting that other states affected by similar crises, including Borno State, Sokoto State, Zamfara State, Kebbi State, and Kwara State, were not given similar support.
MURIC further questioned reports that N1.2 billion was shared among the 19 northern states ahead of the Eid al-Kabir celebration, describing the allocation as disproportionately low compared to the funds given to Plateau.
“How can only one state receive N2 billion while 19 states share N1.2 billion?” the group queried, warning against what it sees as the marginalisation of Muslims. The organisation also called on the government to clarify its stance on Muslim religious infrastructure, demanding equal consideration.
It urged authorities to disclose plans for a national mosque project and ensure similar financial backing if land is allocated. MURIC warned that perceived imbalance in government policies could inflame religious tensions if not urgently addressed.
