The commencement of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba SGR extension marks one of Kenya’s most significant infrastructure investments since the completion of the original Standard Gauge Railway.

Strategically, this project is about much more than rail transport. It is designed to strengthen the Northern Corridor by improving the movement of cargo from the Port of Mombasa through Naivasha to Kisumu and ultimately Malaba, enhancing Kenya’s position as the regional logistics gateway for Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and eastern DRC.

The ongoing public participation, land acquisition and compensation processes are equally important. Infrastructure of this scale succeeds not only through engineering excellence but also by ensuring that affected communities are treated fairly, compensation is transparent and constitutional safeguards are respected.

The recent Court of Appeal decision requiring greater disclosure of documents relating to the original SGR also reinforces a broader governance principle: major taxpayer-funded infrastructure projects must be accompanied by transparency and public accountability.

If delivered on time and integrated with inland ports, highways and regional rail networks, the extension has the potential to reduce freight costs, improve supply chain efficiency, stimulate industrial development around logistics hubs and deepen regional trade under the AfCFTA. The long-term measure of success, however, will be whether the railway achieves high cargo utilisation, commercial sustainability and delivers a meaningful return on the substantial public investment.
