I’ve lost count of how many times an AI has given me a clean, confident number from an annual report that turned out to be wrong once I opened the actual PDF.

That’s why this post landed. Most tools still treat a 300-page filing like a search problem instead of a reading-and-calculating problem. They pull a figure from the wrong table, mix years, or invent a tax rate and keep going like nothing happened.

The four checks he walked through are the part I’m keeping. Ask something that isn’t already written up online. Force it to name the exact pages and line items. Change the assumption in the middle and watch whether it remembers the earlier work. Then pick one number and check it yourself. That last step still catches the sneakiest errors — the ones that sound right but sit one decimal or one footnote off.
The ZTE example makes the point cleanly. Capitalizing 1.72 billion in R&D looks like a huge profit boost until you also pull the amortization from prior years. The net effect almost disappears. Most summaries never get that far.
I’ve started running a version of this process on every report I actually care about. Extra work, but better than getting steered by someone else’s framing or a model that’s quietly making things up.
