A song about judging the people around you became the closing statement on Arctic Monkeys’ debut album. “A Certain Romance” finds Alex Turner observing the tracksuits, arguments and nightlife of his Sheffield surroundings while ultimately admitting an affection for the same characters he appears to criticise. The track closed 2006’s Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, produced by Jim Abbiss, but was never released as a single. Its combination of sharp storytelling and a sweeping guitar finale quickly made it a fan favourite. Live on 8 July 2006, the song captured Arctic Monkeys only months after their debut had become Britain’s fastest-selling debut album at the time.
