In every family, I believe God empowers certain people with a unique opportunity, gift, or ability to change the direction of that family. When that person begins to rise, the familyβs responsibility should not be to compete with them, envy them, or pull them down. It should be to rally around them, strengthen them, and help them reach their full potential.
And when that person succeeds, their responsibility changes. Now, they must reach back and uplift the next person. Then that person reaches back for another. Thatβs how one personβs success eventually becomes generational success.
One of the challenges we sometimes face in African communities is the mentality of, βIf I canβt have it, why should you?β We allow jealousy, competition, pride, and division to destroy opportunities that could have benefited an entire family.
Other communities have demonstrated the power of networks, shared resources, mentorship, family businesses, and generational planning. Thatβs something we should learn from, not because another race has everything figured out, but because there is tremendous power in people intentionally helping one another succeed.
There is an old African proverb:
βIf you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.β
Imagine if every successful African intentionally helped create another successful African. Imagine if every person who made it reached back for one more family member. Eventually, we wouldnβt just be changing individual lives, we would be changing families, communities, and generations.
Your success should never end with you. When God puts you in a position to rise, rise, and then reach back and bring somebody else with you.
