A thing I've noticed from studying up on a lot of Ghibli backgrounds is a lot of them are very contour-heavy, more so than you'd think initially looking at one. They loooove to emphasize edges in whatever way they can. This BG is a bit dramatic in that sense even for them but:

Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness is located in San Juan County, New Mexico, between Chaco Canyon and De-Na-Zin Wilderness. Wilderness has multicolored badlands, sandstone hoodoos, petrified wood and dinosaur bones, similar to those found in nearby Bisti Badlands and De-Na-Zin Wilderness

800 years ago at All Saints Church in Hereford, England, a skillful carpenter carved this gentleman high up in the dark roof where nobody could see him. Five years ago they built an extra floor with bright lights for a restaurant.
