As we close out our World Cup coverage, one final look back at the soul of the tournament: the fans. 💥
We asked Carl Recine, Getty Images Sports photographer, what it was like capturing them. He was one of the photographers tasked with capturing the vibe around the tournament — the joy on the streets, outside the stadiums, in the people living and sharing every moment of the game.
"I was using a Canon R1, and the lenses I was using were mainly a 50mm 1.2 and a 28-70mm 2.0 around the stadium to capture images of fans. My favorite moments that make me smile when I look back on them are just seeing what the World Cup meant to everyone — the pride, the joy on people's faces, everyone living in this beautiful moment. I love it when a photograph makes you smile; that's the power of photography. There sometimes isn't enough of this in the world these days," said Carl.
As we close out our World Cup celebration, we're proud to have covered the moments that brought people together through their passion for sport, moments our photographers documented with excellence, creativity and authenticity.
Next up: the Brazil Women's FIFA World Cup 2027 and the Olympics 2028.

The World Cup may be over, but some of its best moments are still living rent-free in our minds.
We asked staff sports photographer Steph Chambers to walk us through capturing one of the tournament's most viral shots: the roaring screams of Norway's team and fans. 🚣
In Steph's words: "Norway has never advanced this far in the World Cup, so this image has significance for the team, the fans and the country's history. Because it was photographed while standing feet away from Erling, it helps the viewer feel like they're sharing in the proud moment with them. You can chant along."
The shot: captured on a Canon R1 with a 16-35mm f/2.8 lens.

We asked Gene Foca, our Chief Revenue and Marketing Officer, for his favorite World Cup image. He gave us a masterclass instead.
Hear him break down a series of images that, in his view, shaped the modern game: the legacy of icons like Pelé and Carlos Alberto, the story behind the World Cup's second-ever return to the US, and what's likely one of the key moments that led to VAR in football today. All captured and distributed by Getty Images in a way no one else can, and this video gives a glimpse into why.
As the tournament enters its final stretch, it's a timely moment to reflect on the game's biggest moments — and to explore how Getty Images' coverage can support your storytelling as we head into what's next.
