On weekdays, we're carrying with us our BOTM hoping to be transported back to the joy of the weekends when we wind down and crack Makumbi open. We sneak in a few pages during lunch break, peer over our cubicles and check for our supervisors before diving in.
Book Club during a pandemic has been all sorts of weird. But make it fashion! This month we're reading Makumbi's Manchester Happened as part of our 6 month African Lit Marathon from July to the end of the year. Join us, send a DM
Already the first story has given us that Makumbi vibe we've not experienced in over a year since reading her book Kintu in 2019 January and having it remain unbeatable by any other book we read that year. Join us read this, join us discuss with Makumbi.
This month we meet the goddess herself. Is there anyone that can not cry in the presence of the brilliant Jennifer Makumbi? Well, this month, we're reading her amazing book, Manchester Happened aka Let's Tell This Story Properly.
I was one of those unlucky writers whose book launch in India coincided with Covid-19. Cancelled. Left me feeling crushed. Someday in the future, I'll meet my readers in person, but in the meanwhile, we are doing this for EXQUISITE CADAVERS. 27 May, 5:30 pm IST/ 1pm BST
Today I had a brilliant evening with the @GhanaMustRead book club. Very very interesting discussions about both the novels, violence, misogyny, white gaze, writing dialogue, masculinity and all of it. I was very happy, it was my sunshine in this lockdown. Thank you all. 💕
On Sundays we're easy and reading. Excited for Saturday to discuss this one with Meena Kandasamy. In times of covid, one thing remains, we've absolutely set our minds to drinking (tea or gin) during book club discussions.

The happiness when your book travels around the world. Now, this picture from @GhanaMustRead makes me filled with joy and happiness and of course, revolutionary thoughts. ✊🏾❤️
The Reading Chair fever is claiming us one by one. Not unlike the electric chair, but instead of pain, sends pure joy through your body. Electric! Here's K on her Reading Chair determined to finish our book of the month this weekend.
Those after-work readings when you can't wait to see what happens in book of the month. Reading weekdays during a pandemic is becoming increasingly relaxing. Also, congrats to Ileen for getting a new reading chair.
Throwback to this GMR ad where K tells how she finishes book of the months before discussion. (Also, we stan a Queen who sticks her head out of the taxi window and reads, I'll be mindful if I were her, just saying, you never know if anyone wants to snatch a Kazuo Ishiguro book)
🤭🤭 This is the second of Meena Kandasamy’s books I’m reading and she never fails to throw a wrench in what is considered “normal”.
Reading the first few pages of this was such a mind-warp!
This month's new Meena Kandasamy is also very gutting. We'll be discussing this book with the intelligent Meena Kandasamy and we'll be aching for answers, for incidents that our brains wouldn't want to believe isn't fiction. Join us, by sending us a message for a copy.
Our new book of the month for May.
Last Year, we read When I Hit You by Meena Kandasamy and it made us ache. We pondered on domestic abuse and the cultures that help perpetuate them, feminism and lots of other themes.
