Putin’s provocative visit to Japan’s Etorofu island demonstrates utter disrespect to Japan and represents a deliberate attempt to intimidate, escalate tensions, and normalize illegal occupation.

However, no provocative visits can change the reality: Etorofu is part of Japan’s Northern Territories, occupied by Russia.

We believe that Putin’s visit to Etorofu also proves that Moscow only understands the language of strength. The aggressive Russian regime does not appreciate, respect, or reciprocate constructive steps.

Ukraine’s position is unwavering: Japan’s sovereignty over the Northern Territories is grounded in historical facts and international law. No visit, no passage of time, and no attempt to impose a fait accompli can legitimize occupation.

Russia uses the same imperial playbook everywhere. It occupies foreign land, militarizes it, threatens its neighbours, and then tries to make the world accept the illegal as irreversible. Ukraine knows this pattern all too well. It must not succeed, whether in Europe or in the Pacific.

We stand in solidarity with Japan and deeply value its support for Ukraine. We call on our international partners to clearly condemn Putin’s provocative visit, reject any attempt to normalize Russia’s occupation, further isolate the aggressor, and increase sanctions pressure.

本日13日、ロシアのプーチン大統領が択捉島を訪問したと報告を受け、先程、公邸でぶら下がり記者会見を行いました。

2024年1月にプーチン大統領が北方領土を必ず訪問する旨述べて以来、日本政府としては、ロシア側に対し、大統領による北方領土訪問が行われないよう、累次申し入れてきました。

それにもかかわらず、本日、プーチン大統領が択捉島を訪問したことに、強く抗議します。

北方領土は、歴史的にも国際法上も我が国固有の領土であり、ロシアの現職の大統領による今般の択捉島��問は、北方領土に関する日本の一貫した立場と相容れません。

また、日本国民の感情を傷つけるものであり、断じて許容できません。

ロシアによるウクライナ侵略を受けて日露関係は厳しい状況にある中でも、日本はできる限りの努力を払ってきましたが、今回の訪問は、日本国内の対露感情を一層厳しくし、中長期的な関係回復を困難にしたと言わざるを得ません。

ロシア側においては、このことの重大さを深刻に受け止めてほしいと考えています。

In Odesa region, Territorial Recruitment Center (TCK) officers dragged and kicked a 19-year-old out of a taxi. This is both stupid and illegal, you cannot conscript someone that young without proper process.

I’m sharing this because it shows the horrific experiences young men are enduring as a result of russia’s invasion and our own failures in attracting people to serve. No one believes violence is the answer. The young man was almost certainly released the moment they checked his ID, but he will still have been left traumatised and with deep resentment toward the recruiters.

Ukrainians share these videos so that as a society we can improve and remove the bad actors inside the TCK who use force against civilians. Tensions are high, but Ukraine is a country of law and order. We are not russians - we are expected to act accordingly. These videos help drive that change.
