August 1, 1977, 49 years ago. Francis Gary Powers the famous U-2 pilot that was shot down over Russia in 1960 died in a helicopter crash after it ran out of fuel over a park in Encino, California. I lived a half a mile away at the time. I walked over there with a shoe box and collected some of the parts left behind a day later. I kept that box for over 14 years and finally sent it to his son. It ultimately ended up in the Spy Museum in Washington DC. There is a really complete telling of that day he crashed on a aviation history website called https://t.co/YFmaiBfepH. It turns out the fuel gauge was replaced with out Powers knowing about it and it behaved differently. His cameraman George Spears also died in the crash. He should have a memorial in that park. He's a icon of the cold war story.
