ELEKSYON 2025 HAS 57 MILLION STRONG “YOUNG” VOTERS
(Speech delivered during the GMA Masterclass Series in Universidad de Dagupan in Dagupan, Pangasinan and De La Salle-Lipa in Batangas)

Eleksyon na naman po pero this time, mga senador ang pinakamataas na iluluklok natin sa pwesto.

I’ve been in the business for almost 25 years, hindi ko na mabilang ang eleksyon na kinover namin. Since the year 2000 when I started working for GMA, I have covered the election of four presidents, and covered midterm elections in between.

But lately, and I will be honest with you, may isang tanong na laging lumulutang sa akin.

Real talk tayo: May pag-asa pa ba ang bansang ito?

Sino sa inyo ang mga MassComm students dito? Mga Journalism or Broadcast students?

Bakit ‘yan ang pinili n’yong kurso?

I think, it also goes with other courses, laging may component na pa’no ba ako makakatulong? Pa’no ko ba mababago ang sistema? Siguro mayroon tayong messianic complex, ‘yung desire to change, save, something or someone.

At bakit naman hindi?

Hindi kami mayaman, parehong teachers ang aking mga magulang at alam natin na ang mga teachers ang isa sa pinaka-underpaid na propesyon sa bansang ito.

Underpain and overworked.

Pero iginapang, ipinangutang ng aking mga maggulang ang aking pag-aaral. At sa kanilang sakripisyo, doon unti-unting nabuo ang misyon:

Kailangan may magbago. Una ang aking buhay at ng aking pamilya at ikalawa, baka kaya, buhay ng ibang tao na katulad ko.

At ‘yun ang lagi kong sinusubukang gawin sa aking trabaho at sa mga istorya na kinokober ko.

Sa PUV modernization program halimbawa, laging andyan ang boses ng mga maliliit na mga jeepney driver, ‘yung kanilang mga hinaing. At ito ‘yung ipinaparating namin sa mga opisyal ng gobyerno.

Sa West Philippine Sea naman, bakit ba kailangang i-cover ‘yan? Takaw-giyera. Maingay. Maliit lang tayo na bansa.

Simple lang ang sagot: dahil buhay ng mga mangingisda natin, buhay natin ang nakasalalay d’yan.

Teritoryo natin. Atin.

When we went to Pag-asa Island, our goal there was to give face to the lives of the Filipinos there.

Dahil mga Pilipino rin sila. At ‘yung mga original settlers ‘dun, inilagay ng ating gobyerno to stake our claim in that area. Without that so-called effective occupation, malamang wala na sa ating kontrol and lugar ‘yan.

Ang sabi nila, ang media ang Fourth State: tagapagbantay, tagausisa, taga-kastigo kung kinakailangan.

The challenge is to remain true to the role given the economic and political context in which it, we, exists.

And the north star should always be: public welfare. Ang tao. Ang bayan.

Now, when you speak of power, it sounds like an abstract concept. But allow me to flesh out this concept.

In The 2022 National And Local Elections — the No. 12 senator got 15,108,625 Votes.

Remember this number: 15 million.

Sino dito ang mga Gen-X? Mga ipinangank sa pagitan ng 1965 at 1980?

Sino dito ang mga Millenial? Those who were born between 1981 And 1996?

Sino naman ‘yun mga Gen-Z, Those who are aged 18 Up 28 and were born between 1997 And 2007.

Binungkal ng aming GMA Integrated News Research kung ilan ba tayo: At ito ang kanilang nakita:

Out of the 68 miliion registered voters for this elections, pinakamaraming registered voters ay mga millenial with 23 milion, that is 33.74%.

Kasunod ang Gen-Z whichh comprise 26.78% of the voters with 18.3 million.

Pangatlo ang mga Gen-X with 15.5 million and tha tis 22.72% of the voters.

Kasunod na dito ang minamahal nating mga baby boomers, silent, and greatest generations t mga senior citizens with 11.4 million.

Tanda n’yo kung ilan ang votes noong number 12 na senador? 15 million votes.

Ibangga natin ‘yan sa voting population:

‘yung Mga Millenial — 23 Million.
Mga Gen Z - 18.5 Million
Mga Gen-X - 15.5 Million.

Ibig sabihin, kung magkakaisa ang anuman man sa mga henerasyon na ‘to, kayang kaya nilang magpanalo ng isang senador.

Pero syempre imposible naman ‘yan.

I-total natin ‘yan: 57 million.

Ilang percent ng 57 million ang 15 million na kailangang mo to get a senate seat?

Ibig sabihin, ang kailangan lang gawin ng isang kumakandidatong senador ay makakuha ng 265 ng mga Gen-X, Millenials, at Gen-Z.

Ano ‘yan? That is merely one out of four from these age groups. Kung apat kayong magbabarkada, may isa lang na tumiwalag at makuha. Tapos na ang boksing.

Ngayon, alam nyo na siguro kung bakit ang paraan ng pangangampanya ng ilan ay ganun na lang. Kulang na lang, kumain sila ng bubog at magbuga ng apoy.

Gusto nila kayong ma-entertain, dahil gusto nila kayong makuha.

‘Yan ang sinasabi kong kapangyarihan n’yo. That is the voter’s power.

Kaya sabi natin: Vote Wisely.

Sabi naman namin sa GMA: ang iboboto: Dapat Totoo!

Pero pa’no nga ba ang vote wisely na ‘yan?

Alam n’yo may ginagawa kaming social media campaign para sa elections at doon, I tried to get the pulse of the voters.

And what I discovered, inspired me.

Turns out, contrary to my initial bias: young people take elections seriously. Pinag-aaralan nila ang mga kandidato at ang kanilang track record. Hindi lang sila tumitingin at umaasa sa mga advertisement. Nag-uusap sila at nagco-compate. Minsan nagdedebate tungkol sa mga gusto at ayaw nilang iboto.

Sanaol.

At kung ganun pala: may pag-asa pa pala ang bayang ito.

May itinanong din ako sa kanila at ito ang gusto kong iwanan sa inyo as I end my presentation.

I asked them, tinanong ko sila: may saysay pa ba ang mga eleksyon?

Sabi nila: meron.

Sabi nila: may consequence. May balik. May epekto sa buhay natin. Ganyan ang eleksyon at ang klase ng mga kandidatong iniluluklok natin sa pwesto.

Kaya naman, kapag nahihirapan ka na sa buhay mo. Nakukulangan sa mga oportunidad para sa ‘yo at sa ‘yong kapwa.

Kapag napapatanong ka na: ganito na lang ba ang buhay ko?

Kapag sawang-sawa ka nang maging mahirap.
Pwede mo sigurong itanong:
Sino ba ang ibinoto ko noong nakaraang eleksyon?
