BREAKING: The University of Arizona's Tucson campus ranks as the #1 college in the country for gun violence toward students and faculty.
This follows the tragic death of 19-year-old Minhaj Jamshidi, who was shot and killed last night after a dispute with an opposing volleyball player on campus.
In the past three years alone, UArizona has seen 12 students or faculty shot on or near the Tucson campus, five of whom were killed. Neither Northern Arizona University (NAU) nor Arizona State University (ASU) has recorded any incidents of students or faculty being injured or killed by gunfire.
The Pima County university has come under intense scrutiny in recent years due to accusations of inconsistent crisis response, failure to address known threats, and decentralized communication during crises.
A $2.5 million lawsuit was recently settled between the university and the family of Thomas Meixner, a professor fatally shot on campus by a former student. The family accused the university of failing to act despite receiving several reports over the course of a year that the student had been threatening to murder the professor.
In April 2024, 20-year-old Erin Jones was killed, and three others survived gunshot wounds at an off-campus party. Another student survived being shot at in her vehicle on campus that same month.
In September 2022, two students (18, 19) were shot and survived at a party inside a high-rise apartment building near campus.
In April 2022, recent graduate Harrison Weber (24) was killed while visiting his friend (21) at the university. His friend survived after being shot.
