Stepping into our role as the sponsor of the SAICE Bridge Building Competition today reinforced our commitment as GIBB Group CSI to developing future engineering talent and supporting initiatives aimed at inspiring the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

GIBB is pleased to welcome the new Head of Power, Mziwandile Eric Tshwele.
Over the years, Eric has been involved in various aspects of the consulting business, including management and development of skilled human capital. He hails from multi-disciplinary engineering and environmental consulting firm, SSI-DHV, where he established a robust power division during the early to mid-2000s, a +/- ZAR300 million business. He later established a development consultancy practice that continues to explore infrastructure projects in the energy, food, beverages and housing sectors.
Eric has a deep interest in the energy arena and considers energy regulation, and its trading markets, as the emerging business of the future.
GIBB sits at the nexus of opportunity and skill, and we are excited to be a part of Eric's journey.

At the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and South African Academy of Engineering (SAAE) road safety engagement hosted by GIBB, one message was clear: safer roads require shared responsibility across engineering, policy, behaviour, infrastructure and public awareness.
As GIBB Group CEO Vishaal Lutchman noted during the discussion: “We all have a role to play”.
This sentiment captured the heart of the engagement, which brought together industry leaders, researchers, engineers and media to unpack the complex relationship between road infrastructure, human behaviour, policy and public safety.
South Africa has the longest road network in Africa and the tenth longest road network in the world, at approximately 750 000km. With 90% of fatal crashes in 2023 linked to human error, as highlighted by Ms Busisiwe Morale, Transport Researcher and Candidate Engineer from CSIR Smart Mobility, the discussion reinforced the need to look beyond road users alone and consider the full transport system.
“We face a stark and devastating reality,” said Mr Felix Reinders, President-Elect of the South African Academy of Engineering. “Engineering solutions, no matter how sophisticated, cannot protect these lives in isolation.”
Speakers emphasised that human error is often shaped by a wider set of factors, including road signage, infrastructure condition, pedestrian movement, livestock, education, awareness and enforcement.
For GIBB, this speaks directly to the importance of integrated, people-centred transport planning. In the Transportation Sector, GIBB has contributed to major transportation projects across the continent, including the Takoradi – Agona Junction Road Feasibility Study for the Government of Ghana and the Danish International Development Agency.

Before joining GIBB, Vishaal served as CEO of SAICE following his tenure at Transnet, where he was tasked with leading the organisation through a period of economic and social uncertainty. Taking on this challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic meant confronting unprecedented challenges and guiding teams through a rapidly evolving environment. His move to consulting engineering firm Zutari saw him take on the role of Managing Director: Greater Africa, before joining GIBB in 2025.

As GIBB Technical Executive Nokuphumla Mkhwanazi shared during yesterday’s DEVAC Infrastructure Summit panel discussion on “Securing Africa’s water future – What is the real state of our resources?”: “There is hope, in a sense that there is awareness. If we realise collaboration on the water governance part and there is effective management of the shared water system, there is definitely hope because most of the government structures are starting to listen to professionals.”
