A San Fernando Valley man just got a utility bill of about $3,300 for keeping his house at 74 degrees. That’s the California Gavin Newsom doesn’t want to talk about. He’d rather invent a fight with Trump than explain why cooling a home costs this much.

Micah Reed lives there with his wife and two sons. The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power billed him $2,114 for electricity and $756 for water from July 25 through September 23. Reed set his thermostat at 74 in August so his family wouldn’t melt. Valley summers run past 100. That isn’t a luxury setting.

Reed called it a heat tax. The bill comes from the department’s tiered rates and the pass-through charges stacked on top. His video on this insanity has nearly a million views, and he started a petition asking City Controller Kenneth Mejia for an independent audit and summer rate relief. Running an air conditioner shouldn’t put a family in debt.

This is a city utility, and Karen Bass is responsible for it. Newsom is responsible for the state that made power this expensive. California spent years closing plants, blocking new supply, and layering mandates onto the bill. The Reed family in the Valley is the one paying for it.

Newsom doesn’t want this conversation. A $3,300 bill for two months of not melting is harder for him to defend than rattling off his latest slogan attacking Trump. The utility rates in California are Newsom’s record. His fight with Trump is a distraction.
