NEWS: My god. $820 million. NYC taxpayers will pay *$820 million* in just overtime for NYPD this year. Could instead house all 14,000 homeless families in NYC. Then years of rent for 7,000 families out of work & at risk of eviction. With millions left over.https://t.co/gTxt1GlHz8
The Penn Debate Society @Penn traveled to a NY prison for a round against a team of incarcerated debaters, as part of @BPIBard. They also run the The Reentry Debate Initiative in Philly. “Debate can be used as a tool for advocacy,” says senior Allan Lee. https://t.co/WwfqxbmQN2
"DOC has admitted that they would be better able to serve a smaller jail population. We once again call on DOC, the courts, prosecutors, and elected officials to use every avenue to reduce the population of New York’s life-threatening jails" @LegalAidNYC https://t.co/iB67f3epQl
🆕 I joined my colleagues @ShaunAbreu, @EricDinowitzNYC, + @RitaJosephNYC to demand restoration of the NYS Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) for incarcerated students in the FY23 State Budget.
TAP changes lives — we can't allow incarcerated students to be left out or left behind.
When ppl in prison were banned from access to TAP grants in 1995 it came alongside massive divestment in public higher education. We are thrilled that today TAP restoration has been included in the one house budgets alongside these broader investments in higher education. 🎉🎉
(3/3) Lifting the ban on TAP in prisons is a simple & necessary step to promoting New York State’s educational equity, strengthening democracy & building racial justice.
#turnontheTAPNY
Thank you AMs @jeffrion_aubry@KhaleelAnderson & @SenatorRJackson for championing this issue.
(2/3) Black & Brown people are disproportionately represented in prisons. As government our role is to provide more opportunities & additional options within our educational system, not squander them.
This is about dignity and access.
(1/3) Today I introduced my first bill at the @NYCCouncil Stated Mtg!
Reso 65: To restore Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) eligibility for those currently in prison.
Restoring TAP is at the intersection of education equity & racial justice for our communities.
Today, we continue our work to build a fairer, more equitable New York.
By putting those disproportionately impacted by the enforcement of cannabis prohibition at the forefront of our market, we're creating a national model for the industry. Learn more: https://t.co/7fgnB1Xx1B
