Dolly Parton casi chocó su automóvil la primera vez que escuchó a Whitney Houston cantar “I Will Always Love You”.

La canción había nacido casi 20 años antes, cuando Dolly decidió separarse profesionalmente de Porter Wagoner, el hombre que había impulsado su carrera.

Como él se negaba a dejarla marchar, ella escribió una despedida y se la cantó.

Porter terminó llorando.

Tiempo después, Elvis Presley quiso grabarla. Para Dolly era un sueño, hasta que su representante le exigió entregar la mitad de los derechos de autor. Aunque necesitaba el dinero, se negó.

Aquella decisión cambió su vida.

En 1992, Kevin Costner eligió la canción para “The Bodyguard” y Whitney Houston la convirtió en un fenómeno mundial. Dolly escuchó la versión por primera vez mientras conducía y tuvo que detenerse: estaba tan emocionada que temió sufrir un accidente.

“Tomó mi pequeña canción y la convirtió en algo enorme”, recordaría después.

La versión le generó cerca de 10 millones de dólares en regalías. Dolly invirtió parte de ese dinero en un complejo de oficinas situado en un barrio históricamente afroamericano de Nashville.

Lo llamó «la casa que Whitney construyó».

Dolly escribió la canción. Whitney la hizo volar. Y entre las dos crearon una despedida que el mundo nunca pudo olvidar.

Ahora las dos nos han dejado, pero juntas hicieron que una canción de despedida se volviera eterna.

Y lo hizo.
Le pidió que no trajera séquito.

Fue idea de él que cantara I Will Always Love You a capella al principio.
Sin música, solo su voz.
Porque quería que se notara que lo sentía de verdad.

Cuando Whitney murió, Kevin escribió:
“La dejé caer, debí haber estado ahí y no estuve.
El resto de mi vida voy a vivir con ese dolor.
La salvé entonces, debí haberla salvado ahora.
Ella era mi único amor verdadero.
Todavía tengo I Will Always Love You como tono de llamada”.

En el funeral habló 17 minutos.
No quiso recortar.
Dijo que Whitney, a pesar de ser la más grande, siempre se preguntaba:
“¿Soy suficiente?
¿Soy bonita?
¿Les voy a gustar?”.

Y le contestó delante de todo el mundo:
-“No eras suficiente, eras grande.
Cantaste la canción entera sin banda.
Tú hiciste la película.
No eras solo bonita, eras tan hermosa como una mujer puede ser.
La gente no solo te quería, Whitney, te amaba”.

Nunca fueron una historia de amor convencional.
Fueron algo más raro y más triste:
El hombre que la eligió, la protegió y nunca dejó de guardarla…
Ni siquiera después de que ella se fuera.
Y cada vez que suena esa canción, todavía la está cuidando.

I have to admit, I always wondered what this part of Psalm 23 meant. I thought “He anoints my head with oil” was figurative language for God keeping the Psalmist healthy. I never knew this parallel.

Anoint my head with oil

“Sheep can get their head caught in briers and die trying to get untangled. There are horrid little flies that like to torment sheep by laying eggs in their nostrils which turn into worms and drive the sheep to beat their head against a rock, sometimes to death. Their ears and eyes are also susceptible to tormenting insects. So the shepherd anoints their whole head with oil. Then there is peace. That oil forms a barrier of protection against the evil that tries to destroy the sheep. Do you have times of mental torment? Do the worrisome thoughts invade your mind over and over? Do you beat your head against a wall trying to stop them? Have you ever asked God to anoint your head with oil? He has an endless supply! His oil protects and makes it possible for you to fix your heart, mind, and eyes on Him today and always! There is peace in the valley! May our good good Father anoint your head with oil today so that your cup overflows with blessings! God is good and He is faithful!!”
