Survival tips for when you're br0k€ ⚠️
Rice + beans + plantain is more filling that ANY soup and swallow for the same price. That's the holy trinity of low budget food. Nothing else comes close
Two portions of 100 naira groundnut is more than 1 portion for 200 naira. You can apply this to literally any other small-scale shopping and it'll work the same
Buy groceries at a local farmer's market as opposed to a city market. It's literally the same thing but way cheaper.
You want to pick a "drop" (shuttle) but can't afford to pay for the whole car or tricycle? No problem. Flag down one that's plying your route and pay for ALL the back seats. Way cheaper than taking a drop
The difference between 2kg of gas and 3kg isn't one kg. It's a lot more and if you've used cooking gas for long enough, you already know this. More gas is more economical.
Plan your errands in the same route so you do more on your way out. For instance, you can cut your hair on your way to church for rehearsal. Right after then, stop by a supermarket on your way back for some supplies. You'll spend less on transportation.
Don't run out of grains and cereals no matter how bad things get. Grains and cereals will quite literally see you through
If you live in a very small apartment, fill a large bucket with water and leave it open in your bathroom before you go to bed. Leave the bathroom door open
A packet of paracetamol, immodium, ampiclox or Ciprotab ... Will come in handy in almost every case of basic emergency illnesses
Put onions on the floor, put crayfish on top, put rice inside a closed container. Leave garri partly open.
When going out to buy Buka, carry your takeaway packs. You see that 600 naira extra for takeaway packs every time, just have yours at home and you'll save over 3k a month if you buy takeaway meals a lot.
A tin of Geisha (mackerel) or sardines can 2x or even 3x the quantity of any soup if you know ball.
Buy your own fresh groundnut and fry at home. Superior value for money.
Buy 6 units of fresh scombia, sardines or similar market fish. Season and cook. Lift a few o pieces for each small meal you cook next. They can go 1-2 weeks.
Plantain has more applications than yam and is cheaper.
if your plantain is over ripen and too soft, just put it in porridge beans. It blends into a very rich, sweet mash and makes the beans 20,000 times better.
If you can't afford beef or chevon, use Suya for small instant soups, noodles or concoction rice. It's surprisingly very tasty.
If you're down to your last 50k, use 10k to buy just custard powder, 5k for sachet milk creamer (in rows) and a packet of sugar. If you know, you know.
