Today, May 1, 2025, we are excited to announce that HB578, The Jason Flatt Act – North Carolina, passed the North Carolina House with a vote of 108 yeas to 0 nays and now heads to the North Carolina Senate. We at The Jason Foundation want to thank NC Child the lead organization in North Carolina whose team has worked so very hard to provide legislators information and resources they needed to support the legislation and the primary sponsors in the House that provided the passion in getting this Bill moved through the House – Representative Pickett, Representative Budd, Representative Hawkins, and Representative Lamberth.
We also want to thank the entire legislative body in the House for their passionate support. When passed by the Senate (hopefully) and signed by the Governor, this Bill will save lives and make lives better for youth and families across North Carolina. We look forward to North Carolina becoming the 22nd state to pass The Jason Flatt Act, which provides educators with information, tools, and resources to help prevent suicide.
Meghan Talbott moved from California to Davidson after losing two young sons to suicide. Now a volunteer with @namicharlotte, she's supporting the proposed Jason Flatt Act, which would empower school officials in NC to recognize warning signs in students. https://t.co/o9yeo4gX70
A powerful story from a mom in Mecklenburg who lost two of her sons to suicide.
She volunteers now with @namicharlotte and is also helping us advocate for the Jason Flatt Act in North Carolina to provide suicide prevention programming for school personnel.
Whew. Watching H578 pass the House today was everything! It will undoubtedly save young lives, and that is why we do what we do. Beyond grateful to @amperkinson, @JasonFoundation, @clarkflatt, Rep. Ray Pickett and all the bill sponsors who got us to this point. #ncga#ncchild
Thrilled to see H389 pass the House today. This bipartisan bill will certainly address the child care workforce crisis by expanding the reach of Child Care Workforce Academies. Huge thanks to all of bill’s sponsors! #ncleg#ncga#ncpol#ECE#ncchild
We celebrate this lifesaving piece of legislation in honor of a child lost too soon. May Jason's legacy life on through all of us. And to think, all of this happened on Jason's dad's birthday, @clarkflatt! @JasonFoundation#ncga#ncpol#ncchild#hbdclark
Today the Jason Flatt Act was introduced in the NC House. The legislation makes suicide prevention education part of the programming provided to all licensed educators. We are thankful to sponsors Ray Pickett, Donny Lambeth, @zackhawkinsnc, & Laura Budd.

Today our Senior Director of Policy and Government Relations Tiffany Gladney and Policy Director Cassandra Rycek participated in the press conference announcing House Bill 425, Protect Youth From Harms of Vaping & Nicotine.
They also met a llama outside on the mall.
"ABC11 spoke with Tiffany Gladney, who works with the advocacy group NC Child. She supports the bill"
"It's impacting their learning, cyberbullying, teacher morale ... And while this legislation will not completely solve the youth mental health crisis, it is a great first step"
