THE NIGHT MY MOTHER PRETENDED SHE WASN'T HUNGRY

🗣️When I was 17, I caught my mother doing something I'll never forget.
And honestly, it took me years to understand what it meant.
We were struggling financially. Some nights, we had food. Other nights, we had to pretend everything was okay.
One evening, I came home from school and found a plate of rice on the table.
It was enough for one person.
My mother smiled and said, "Eat, baby. I already ate at work."
I believed her.
I ate every grain of rice while she sat across from me, smiling and asking about my day.
That night, I woke up around 2 a.m. because I was thirsty.
As I walked toward the kitchen, I heard a strange sound.
Someone was crying.
I stopped near the doorway.
It was my mother.
She was sitting on the kitchen floor, holding her stomach. Beside her was an empty pot she had scraped clean.
She hadn't eaten.
Not that night.
Not the night before, either.
She had been giving me her food and pretending she wasn't hungry.
I stood there, unable to move.
I wanted to run to her, hug her, and tell her I was sorry.
But I was 17, and for the first time in my life, I understood something that broke my heart.
