Niger: civil society in Agadez calls on the State to take action against the #Somida mining company

Civil society organizations in Agadez, northern Niger, this week called on the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP). In particular, they denounce the failure of Société des Mines de Dasa (Somida) to meet its commitments and comply with national laws.

Somida, 80% owned by the Canadian company Global Atomic Corporation ($GLO #GlobalAtomic) and 20% by the State of Niger, plans to mine uranium in the Dasa zone between Agadez and Arlit. The plant is currently under construction.

At the beginning of August, the chiefs of the villages affected had already asked Somida to respect its commitments to the local population. In turn, civil society is calling for greater consideration to be given to local recruitment and for the environmental impact study to be resumed.

"We currently have rock paintings that have not been taken care of; we have our traditional cemeteries; we have our mosques; we have our roads that have been blocked. The men who were there have been evicted, without any form of compensation. We have asked for the environmental impact study to be resumed [...] The State must protect these populations by ensuring that the law is respected by whoever it may be."

With its last reactor due for early retirement this weekend, Taiwan is opening the door to a resurrection of nuclear power.
Lawmakers have revised a bill to extend the operation of its reactors by 20 years, beyond the original 40. This revision allows operators to apply for license renewal before, as well as after, its expiry.

Reactor No. 1 at the V.C. Summer power plant in South Carolina receives an extension of its operating license until 2062, for a total of
80 years in all since its commissioning. It's becoming clear that the vast majority of American reactors will operate for up to 80 years.

Construction of unit No2 at China's Shidaowan power plant in Shandong Province has just begun, while unit No1 saw the light of day in July of this year.
construction began in July last year. The reactors are domestic “Hualong One” technology. The plant will comprise 4 reactors.
