A review of Chinese tree species conservation status & practical conservation work carried out by BGCI & partners in China over more than a decade found that >100 Chinese tree taxa have benefited from integrated in & ex situ conservation action! @GTA_GTSG

At least 30% of the world's tree species face extinction in the wild. They range from well-known oaks and magnolias to tropical timber trees. It is twice the number of threatened mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles combined. #Biodiversity#Forests https://t.co/UB2tOvKHwO
On International Biodiversity Day, the Ginkgo biloba tree, planted on campus (listed as endangered in the IUCN red list of threatened species) reminds us of the need to protect our environment. Biodiversity is a key component of our BSc Hons #Biology degree #BiodiversityDay
Soils are an important part of biodiversity - from the biodiversity within, to the biodiversity of plants that rely upon it and the ecosystems that build from there. #BiodiversityDay and its time to think about all of the diversity for a shared future!
@bgci
22 May is #BiodiversityDay 🌏🌱 We all have a role to play in acting #ForNature
One action you can take is to support tree planting, habitat restoration & agroforestry practices which protect, restore, and enhance biodiversity.

#China has officially launched its National Botanical Garden in Beijing, with ambitious goals in off-site conservation and scientific research in plant diversity, after fulfilling one of its key commitments at last year’s UN #Biodiversity Conference #COP15. #climate
“The Global Conservation Consortium for Erica allows us to focus international botanical, horticultural, and conservation expertise on preserving biodiversity at its most fundamental level: preventing species extinctions” - @PirieMike@BergenGardens
#DYK? With >300 species, magnolias are widely appreciated around the world for their ornamental qualities & as sources of medicine & timber. However, many are also in peril. The Red List of Magnoliaceae found that 47% of Magnolia species are threatened with extinction in the wild
The island of Socotra - which split from mainland Arabia 34 million years ago - is home to unique flora, including the Socotra dragon tree.
However this tree, along with more of the island's rare species, face an uncertain future...

We can then use these assessments to conserve and restore those most at risk. Like is done on the Global Trees Campaign - https://t.co/zPukcYpTcd

Why care about the #StateofWorldsTrees Report? The report allows prioritisation of tree conservation on a species, local, national & international level. More conservation assessments for trees enables limited resources to be channelled towards species identified as most at risk
A GTC project between 2010-15 trialled different lansan resin extraction methods. Following the study, a sustainable management plan was adopted, resulting in a win-win-win: for the tappers, for local communities, and the trees!
More on the study here: https://t.co/ryxE4BN9wi
#DYK? The Lansan tree in St Lucia produces a culturally & economically valuable resin on which many local people rely for income. Unsustainable harvesting of the resin has led to significant declines across its range
