The Veiled Virgin was carved by Giovanni Strazza from a single block of marble using traditional hand tools typical of 19th century academic sculpture.

He began by roughing out the overall form to establish the proportions, then progressively refined the figure with chisels, rasps, and drills to define facial features, folds of fabric, and surface transitions.

The veil effect was achieved by extremely careful reduction of marble thickness in selected areas so that light interacts differently across the surface, creating the illusion of thin, translucent fabric even though it is solid stone.

The final stage involved polishing and fine surface finishing, while selectively leaving parts slightly less polished to enhance contrasts between skin, veil, and underlying form. The effect relies entirely on carving skill and control of depth rather than any added material or treatment.
