L2 vs L3 vs Custom DA in the Arbitrum Ecosystem
All these terms can feel like alphabet soup. L2, L3, DA, Orbit. Let’s clean it up and keep it grounded in how @arbitrum actually uses them.
Start with the base idea:
Ethereum L1 = the settlement + security root.
Arbitrum tech = ways to scale on top of that, with different trade-offs. Now inside the Arbitrum world, you’ll mostly hear about three flavours:
1️⃣ L2 on Arbitrum (Orbit L2s)
These are chains that:
🔹Settle their state to Ethereum L1.
🔹Use the Arbitrum stack (Orbit) for scaling.
Often want to be serious environments for #DeFi, liquid markets, big apps, or ecosystems.
They make sense if you:
🔹Need strong security guarantees anchored directly to Ethereum.
🔹Expect meaningful value to flow through your chain.
Want deep composability with the broader Ethereum world.
You can think of them as full citizens of the Ethereum security layer, but with Arbitrum’s rollup brain.
2️⃣ L3 on Arbitrum (Orbit L3s)
L3s typically:
Settle not directly to Ethereum, but to an L2 like Arbitrum One.
Use Orbit as well, but it is more app-specific or ecosystem-specific.
Optimize hard for UX, speed, and cost rather than maximum security.
Why would you choose an L3?
🔹You’re building a game, social app, or specialized DeFi stack that needs ultra-low fees.
🔹You want quick customizations: gas token choice, native account systems, specific fee models.
🔹You’re okay with a security sandwich:
Your chain → Arbitrum → Ethereum.
For users, it might just feel like:
This app is insanely fast and cheap, even if they never see the word L3.
3️⃣ Custom DA (Data Availability) in the Arbitrum Ecosystem
DA = where you publish the data that proves what your chain is doing.
By default, Arbitrum Rollups use Ethereum L1 for DA, but Orbit also supports AnyTrust-style setups, where you can:
Use cheaper DA solutions or committees. Offload some of the cost of posting data onchain. Gain lower fees in exchange for a different trust/security profile.
So when you hear custom DA, think:
My chain can pick where and how it stores its data, and I can tune that based on my needs.
Good fits for custom DA:
- High-frequency gaming

Environments where losing a bit of DA robustness is acceptable for cheaper costs.
So when does each make sense? L2 on Arbitrum (Rollup, Ethereum DA):
- Big DeFi ecosystems
- High-value assets / RWAs
- Institutional or regulated flows
- Chains where security is non-negotiable
L3 on Arbitrum (Orbit on top of Arbitrum One/Nova):
- Games, entertainment, social graphs
- Niche UX-heavy apps
- Experiments that might later “graduate” to L2
Custom DA (AnyTrust-style Orbit chains):
- Apps with insane activity but low per-TX value
- Use cases where speed and cost beat “max trust”
- Projects that want to control their DA costs tightly
Once you see it like this, the ecosystem stops looking like jargon
and starts looking like a menu of options.
