What happens when crypto prices fall but I hold USDT?

This is one of the most underappreciated advantages that many Nigerian crypto users haven't fully internalized yet.

When the broader crypto market crashes, and it does, with regularity - Bitcoin falls, Ethereum falls, altcoins fall harder.

In a 40% market correction, someone holding ₦5 million worth of Bitcoin wakes up with ₦3 million worth of Bitcoin. That's a painful reality that has happened to many people.

USDT doesn't do that.

Because USDT is pegged to the US dollar at a 1:1 ratio, a crypto market crash has essentially no effect on its naira value (beyond normal naira-dollar fluctuation, which is a different thing entirely). If you're holding USDT during a market crash, you're watching the carnage without being in it. You're holding dollar-denominated value on the sidelines.

This is exactly why experienced Nigerian traders keep a portion of their portfolio in USDT. When Bitcoin is at ₦150 million and they feel the market is overextended, they move some holdings into USDT. When Bitcoin corrects to ₦90 million, they buy back in with that same USDT and now own more Bitcoin than they started with.

For the person who isn't trading but just wants to hold dollars against naira inflation, USDT is also doing that job perfectly. The naira has lost significant value year on year. Holding savings in USDT means your purchasing power in dollar terms doesn't shrink with the naira.

Volatility protection. Inflation hedge. Exit liquidity. All three in one asset.

That's why so many Nigerians have made USDT their default holding position.
