Support comprehensive policies for trans and nonbinary students!
Trans and nonbinary students in schools with a trans and nonbinary student specific policy were less than half as likely as those without to experience discrimination related to their name or pronouns in school.
Support GSAs!
We've found that LGBTQ+ students who
attend schools with a GSA are less likely to
report negative indicators of school climate; they're less likely to hear bias remarks, less likely to feel unsafe, and experience less severe victimization.
Setting the stage for an amazing school year can be exciting and challenging. It is especially important now for educators and administrators to create safe and affirming environments where LGBTQ+ students can thrive. #RiseUp4LGBTQ+ 🏳️🌈

Making schools safe and affirming for LGBTQ+ students means eliminating school policies and practices that discriminate against LGBTQ students and quashing discipline disparities.
Discipline disparities of LGBTQ+ students may be due to the existence of discriminatory practices and policies; LGBTQ+ students who had experienced discriminatory policies and practices at school reported higher rates of school discipline.
15.1% of LGBTQ students had received in-school or out-of-school suspension. 1.3% of LGBTQ students had been expelled. Two in five (39.8%) LGBTQ students reported experiencing at least one of these forms of school discipline. -GLSEN
More specifically, 40.2% of LGBTQ+ youth experiencing discrimination at school had experienced some form of disciplinary action, compared to 22.6% of LGBTQ+ youth who had not experienced discrimination.
