At an October 23rd senate hearing, industry leaders were pushing Congress to hasten federal reviews of new chemicals, while an environmental health expert warned such changes will lead to more pollution and human health harms. This is what Dark Money does.

It doesn't matter which party. Both major parties have allowed corporate cash to corrupt our political system. But together, we can change that.

The Citizens Over Corporations Amendment would overturn Citizens United and help restore power to we the people, not the billionaire class, not big corporations, but everyday Americans.

The study, published in the journal Nature, highlights one way in which high levels of fructose consumption promote tumor growth. In a process called interorgan lipid transfer (when fats move between organs and tissues in the body), the liver makes fructose more available to cancer cells by turning it into nutrients in the blood they can use. High fructose intake has also been shown to contribute to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and linked to diabetes, heart disease, and colorectal cancer.

That's not all. HFCS is made from insecticidal GMO corn (corn that produces a toxic insecticide within every cell of the plant) that's doused with carcinogenic glyphosate, glufosinate, 2,4-D and/or dicamba herbicides. FDA Refuses to Set Tolerance Levels for Toxic PFAS "Forever Chemicals" in Food: The FDA has rejected a legal petition demanding it set limits on toxic PFAS in food, marking another setback for public health advocates’ push to limit exposures to the dangerous compounds.

The agency is refusing to set limits despite a growing body of science and the EPA finding that food is the biggest source of PFAS exposure. Testing has found the levels of PFAS in single servings of some contaminated foods to be equivalent to drinking many glasses of contaminated water.

Recent FDA testing found 70% of seafood samples contain the chemicals, while independent milk testing found it in 12% of 50 samples, including extremely high levels in Whole Foods and Kirkland Signature brands.

Meat and crops produced on farms that use sewage sludge (which are most conventional farms) have been found by independent tests to contain high levels of PFAS, and some state agencies have ordered contaminated food and milk to be taken off the market.

Independent testing has found high levels of PFAS in blueberries, kale and other water-rich produce because the chemicals are attracted to water. Independent testing also found beer to be contaminated.

In our last Connecting the Dots email newsletter, we reported on the EPA's wave of new PFAS-based pesticide approvals, a move that will undoubtedly increase the toxic PFAS contamination of our food supply.

The FDA's abdication of its responsibility to prevent the adulteration of our food by dangerous toxins is yet another "Make America Healthy Again" campaign failure. This is especially disappointing because Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has authority over the FDA, unlike the EPA.

New York Sues 3M, DuPont, and Others Over Toxic PFAS Chemicals in Consumer Goods: The state lawsuit was filed against 3M, DuPont, and Chemours, Corteva and EIDP, which were part of DuPont ​prior to spinoffs, for harming the environment and people's health by selling PFAS "forever chemicals" that they knew were toxic, for use in consumer products. NY Attorney General Letitia James accused the companies of hiding the risks of chemicals known as PFAS from ​the public for decades, even as they began phasing out some of the chemicals. She also said the ​defendants did nothing to materially reduce the public nuisance that their manufacture and sale ⁠of the chemicals contributed to for decades. “For far too long, our communities have unfairly shouldered the costs of protecting people from these toxic forever chemicals and cleaning up their contamination," James said in ​a statement. "I look forward to ensuring the companies responsible for PFAS pollution are held accountable.”

NY AG James should fight for $100 billion in damages. That might not even be enough considering the decades of water, soil and air pollution, and the untold human disease caused these PFAS chemicals and these corporations' immoral, unethical behavior.

A new first-of-its-kind study identified picloram, a persistent herbicide widely used on conventional pastures and in forests—followed by the ubiquitous glyphosate—as two herbicides most strongly linked to rising rates of colorectal cancers in younger adults. Colorectal cancer leaped from the fifth-leading cause of death in adults under 50 in 1990 to first place in 2023. Researchers found troubling associations between exposure to these widely used weedkillers and early-onset colorectal cancer, adding to a growing body of evidence that our everyday chemical exposures may be playing a role in this alarming trend. As use of these herbicides continues across agriculture and landscapes, the findings underscore the urgent need for deeper investigation, stronger safeguards, and a shift toward safer, non-toxic alternatives.

Corteva Agriscience (a spinoff of Dow and DuPont) makes picloram-based Tordon weedkiller and Bayer-Monsanto makes glyphosate-based Roundup weedkiller. Bayer has already had over 170,000 Roundup-cancer lawsuits filed against it worldwide for Roundup’s link to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Public interest researchers need to do more study of picloram and glyphosate’s link to colon cancer, and quickly. We think everyone that has gotten colon cancer because of these herbicides needs their day in court, too.

Vermont Becomes First State in the Nation to Ban Paraquat Herbicide: Paraquat is widely used in commodity crop production such as corn, soybeans, and cotton as well as in the farming of conventional fruits, beans, nuts and other crops. Paraquat is also approved as a desiccant on some crops, including beans and potatoes. The toxic herbicide is linked to Parkinson’s disease, non-Hodgkin lymphoma and childhood leukemia. The largest manufacturer of paraquat is ChemChina-Syngenta (owned by China, headquarters in Switzerland) and is mostly produced in China, the UK, and Switzerland. But get this: these same countries have also banned the herbicide for use within their own borders. Syngenta, facing over 8,000 U.S. lawsuits alleging that its paraquat concoction, brand name Gramoxone, caused plaintiffs’ Parkinson’s disease, announced this year it would no longer sell the herbicide. Unfortunately, there are other pesticide manufacturers that are still producing paraquat.

The Guardian revealed many of Syngenta’s internal files on paraquat in 2022 and 2023. The files show the company employed an array of secretive tactics to hide or downplay research linking its chemical to Parkinson’s, discredit independent research and mislead or otherwise influence regulatory decisions to protect paraquat sales.

Cases of Parkinson’s have more than doubled in the last 25 years and continue to rise. Ray Dorsey, a neurologist who directs research into environmental causes of brain diseases at Atria Health and Research Institute, said Vermont’s action was “another step toward preventing this largely man-made disease”. He said that many countries had banned paraquat and said it “is long overdue for the U.S. to do the same.”

Costco Organic Chicken Isn’t Organic: A new investigation reveals an "organic" and "certified human" farm that raises birds for Pilgrim's Pride, a major supplier of Costco's certified organic chicken, severely neglecting and abusing animals.

During his roughly 2.5-month stint at the farm, the investigator documented unsanitary living conditions, along with severe neglect — like birds with twisted necks and open wounds — and disturbing cases of outright abuse, including the farm manager leaving birds to die slowly in deadpiles, and euthanizing birds by bludgeoning them with PVC pipes and rakes. In one instance, the farm manager crushed a bird with a bucket, and in another, slammed a chicken against a wall. "It was every day that the manager would be bludgeoning chickens to death or burying them alive," said the investigator.

Such cruelty has been found over and over and over again in the U.S. poultry industry, including numerous past investigations of farms that supply Pilgrim's Pride.

What's notable about this new investigation is that it exposes problems within two beloved, and supposedly more ethical, institutions in American life: Costco — with its higher employee wages and stated commitments to progressive causes — and organic farming, which has long been perceived as a more moral sector of the food industry.

The investigation also reveals the immense shortcomings of governmental oversight, corporate animal welfare guidelines, and third-party inspectors, because at each step of the supply chain — from the farm, to the chicken supplier, to the organic certifiers and American Humane Society auditors, and finally, to Costco and other corporate buyers — severe animal cruelty appeared to slip through the cracks. The investigation illustrates that organic and even basic welfare standards are only as good as their enforcement.
