No.17 Squadron ‘Golden Arrows’ went into the Kargil War with the most Obsolete Aircraft the Mig-21 Type-96 led by their Gallant Commanding Officer a Ex-RIMCOLIAN Wing Commander BS Dhanoa (Later Air Chief Marshal) and came out Victorious as the most Decorated Squadron. Their Flight Commander Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja was Killed after his Mig-21 was Shot down by Shoulder fired MANPAD, he was later taken as Hostage and Shot dead by Northern Light Infantry troops of Pakistan Army. The Squadron was Inducted as Fighter Recce Squadron to Conduct Reconnaissance Missions but when IAF changed to Medium Altitude Level Release Attack the Commanding officer of the Squadron then Wing Commander BS Dhanoa (Later Air Chief Marshal) volunteered for the Role and in record time he changed the Configuration of the Jets and Also Conducted Training in Tosha Maidaan Range for Bombing role to Carry out Ground Attacks and the Role of the Squadron was changed from Fighter Recce Missions to Night Low Flying Strike missions and Low Valley Flying Bombing missions these missions were very tough to Fly. The Profile of these Night Low Flying Strike missions were such that the pilots required immense Valley Flying Skills during Night and had to fly just 1 Km Above the Terrain Level during Night Time conducting Bombings. One such Pilot in No.17 Squadron was Flt Lt Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal who Flew 4 Night Low Flying Strike Bombing missions with no Prior Experience and Having no Prior Qualification. Unfortunately Flt Lt Rajpal Singh Dhaliwal (Later Wing Commander) was also Killed in a Crash.
A true hero #SqnLdrAjayAhuja 🦅🇮🇳🙏🏻
Feel the need to be inspired?
To learn about real heroes?
Abt those who served and sacrificed?
Abt families left behind to endure ?
Abt an India that thrashed the terror pushing cowards in Pakistan.
