Inference engineering is not easy btw.
You need a solid grasp of how models work and good fundamentals of computer architecture to be really good at it.

It's very different from making application software, it's working close to the metal and the better you understand GPUs( and computers ) the more will you be able to squeeze out performance and the more will you be valued.

Also it's a really fast moving field right now so I don't think there is a particular roadmap to be a good inference engineer, just start getting your hands dirty!
