When Trump leaves office, the temperature of U.S.–South Africa relations will drop almost immediately. Democratic administrations normally avoid emotional language, avoid taking sides in South Africa’s racial debates, and prefer quiet diplomacy. They treat South Africa as a regional partner, not a political battlefield.

A Democratic president would likely restore cooperation in public health, climate, trade and security. They may not love everything South Africa does, but they prefer stable partnerships. Many of the cuts or freezes Trump makes will quietly be reversed, because they were motivated by politics, not policy. Programmes like PEPFAR, USAID projects and university partnerships will be restored, not because of charity, but because Democrats believe in long-term global health and stability.

The biggest winners of that shift will be ordinary South Africans who depend on HIV treatment, clinics, local NGOs, research programmes and export markets. Their lives improve almost overnight. Government departments will also find it easier to negotiate trade and security matters without being insulted or punished publicly.

What happens to AfriForum politically

AfriForum gains most of its oxygen when Trump or far-right groups abroad promote the “white genocide” narrative. When a Democratic administration returns, Washington will ignore AfriForum’s messaging completely. U.S. embassies and State Department officials will stop engaging with their claims because Democrats rely on evidence, not culture-war emotion. Reports about South African violence will be placed back into proper context: high crime overall, not targeted racial extermination.

This means AfriForum loses influence outside South Africa. They will no longer be able to say “America believes us” or “the White House agrees with our warnings.” Their arguments become more isolated, and some of their international donors may pull back because the media attention dries up.

Inside South Africa, AfriForum will still exist, but they will be seen more as a domestic activist group, not an international voice. Their political power shrinks when the U.S. government stops repeating the same talking points.

What happens to Elon Musk’s position

Elon Musk has a massive global audience, but he also moves with political trends. During Trump’s presidency he benefits from supporting the narrative about South Africa because it aligns with Trump’s base and his own online following. But when Democrats return, Musk’s attacks on South Africa lose diplomatic weight because the government in Washington no longer supports them.

Democrats view Musk as a politically disruptive figure but not an authority on foreign policy. They will not let his tweets shape U.S. diplomacy. Musk may still post, criticise, or dramatise events in South Africa, but those posts no longer lead to official action. They become just opinions.

For Musk personally, nothing serious happens. He stays rich, powerful and influential. But his comments about South Africa stop carrying any policy consequences. They become more performative, not impactful.

What this means for South Africa’s long-term relationship with the U.S.

South Africa learns from periods like this. After Trump, it becomes even more clear that the country cannot rely on a single American president for stability. The government will diversify its partnerships with China, the EU, the African Union and the Gulf states so that no future U.S. leader can threaten the country’s health system or trade.

A Democratic administration will appreciate that independence but will still rebuild cooperation wherever it benefits both sides. South Africa will be more cautious, more balanced and less afraid of political waves from Washington. The relationship becomes more stable.
